When I do not have time to really read messages, I often just put them in a file on my computer - in this case "Mitchell". While looking over old Mitchell messages I just found one that was sent to the list 17 April 2000 that I thought was very interesting. It named all the Mitchells in TN. I recognized many as being the children and/or grandchildren of Joab, but there are many I did not recognize. I thought I would mention this in case there are new members. I have been on and off this list while working on another family, but am glad I did not miss this one post. I guess they did not consider children with Indian mothers as being legitimate. It list Samuel Mitchell in 1807 as father of illegitimate daughters. Then it list the names of these daughters, Sophia and Alzira as being legitimatized. Although I have done much Indian genealogy, I never heard of anything like this before. Maybe it was because they were mentioned in a treaty as being the children of Molly Folsom and Samuel Mitchell. Who knows?????? Marlene
I would love to see a copy of this email with all the TN Mitchells. Mine were in Grainger County but one, James settled on the western side in early 1800s. Some of his descendants ended up in Missouri as did my direct line from his brother, Greenberry.
