Hello Everyone, I am a new lister and was wondering if anyone on the list was researching the Mitchell/Mitchel name in Dean or Cockermouth in Cumberland, UK. The name seems to have changed from Mitchel in Dean to Mitchell in Cockermouth in later times. My search began with the will of Robert Barwise of Kirby, Dean in Cumberland and had named in that will Joseph Mitchel and his wife Mary Mitchel (nee Barwise, Barrows) and their children as below... <snip> "First I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Mitchel the wife of Joseph Mitchel the sum of ten pounds, of good and lawful money to be paid six months after my decease, also a chest which was formerly her mothers. Likewise I give and bequeath to Joseph and Robert Mitchel sons of Joseph Mitchel and Susannah Mitchel daughter of Joseph Mitchel aforesaid, the sum of twenty shillings each, to be paid twelve months after my decease." <snip> (The three children mentioned in the will above are Robert Mitchell born at Brigham 1778, Joseph Mitchell born at Brigham 1773 and Susan Mitchell born at Dean in 1772.) I then discovered A Mitchell family on the 1851 census in Cockermouth.. Main Street Jonathon MITCHELL, Head, M, 45, Grocer and Bacon Curer, Dean Mary MITCHELL, Wife, 38, Abbeyholme John MITCHELL, Son, S, 22, Grocer, Embleton Isaac MITCHELL, Son S, 19, Grocer, Embleton Ann MITCHELL, Daur, S,17, Wythrop Harrison MITCHELL, Son, 5, Scholar, Cockermouth Martha MITCHELL, Daur, 2, Cockermouth Mary MITCHELL, Sister,S, 42, Dean Robinson MITCHELL, Brother, S, 29, Auctioneer, Dean Mary HEAD, Serv, 18, house servant, Harrington These people are part of the Mitchell family at Dean, just a later generation.... Jonathon born 1806 was son of Robert Mitchell (born 1778 Brigham) and Ann , (can't find a marriage for the couple). Robert above is mentioned in the will as son of Joseph Mitchel and Mary Barwise(Barrows), Robert Barwise's daughter and son-in-law. There were 7 children, including Jonathon Mitchell 1806, Mary Mitchell 1808 (on the census as sister), Joseph Mitchell 1811, John Mitchell 1813, Isaac Mitchell 1816, Robert Mitchell 1818, Robinson Mitchell 1821, (intriguing must be a Robinson marriage there somewhere, on the census as brother), all registered at Dean. I have found a few of the above family on the 1881 census. Does anyone on the list have an interest in this Mitchell family I would like to hear from you.
