    1. [MITCHELL] Re: Thomas MITCHELLs
    2. Hi Lori and list - Reference - VA Mitchell's - Thomas Mitchell (Adult) - According to Margaret Mitchell's father (Muse Mitchell), their Thomas Mitchell was born about 1750c and married a Mary Ann Barnett. The "Mitchell Papers" at the GA Archives (which were in Atlanta, now Morrow) had letters, ancestry charts and speculation regarding just who their ancestor really was. Their tradition said it was from a Willaim deWitt Mitchell and a Miss Roseberry - I've never found proof of that, nor of their Thomas Mitchell ever being in early GA records. Muse's daughter who was Margaret Mitchell, author, had all of her family and private papers burned apon her death, so I don't know if she did anything towards her own Mitchell lineage or not - Muse hired.. it was said, a genealogist who was not experienced and sent her to Wilkes Co GA to find the elusive Thomas Mitchell, their ancestor - she came back with data on an adult Thomas, but the data they show is the same as the adult Thomas who died about 1788/89 and of whom married Elizabeth Dooley. According to Robert Scott Davis, Jr's books on early GA history, Elizabeth and Thomas had only two children, one son and a daughter. The Barnetts were in GA and show in the early records. There was a place called Barnett Shoals as well - I found one reference where a "WILLIAM" Mitchell married a Mary BARNETT before 1777, that would be a good clue in my opinion, as the first son in the lineage proved from the Margaret Mitchell family was a WILLIAM Mitchell who married Eleanor Thomasson, name sometimes spelt as Thomasston and Thompson. She was suppose to be from SC and born about 1780 - I did some research on her and found that branch lived in VA first, contrary to the Mitchell's and also they lived in NC and then migrated to SC and GA - In early Henry Co GA, there were those Mitchells who were buying land in the town of McDonough GA - They are unaccounted for, except for the fact that a WILLIAM Mitchell was involved in buying land along with the other Mitchells. My Hinchey Mitchell was in Henry County GA no later than 1822 - He shows in the Walton Co census for 1820 and also for drawing land there. As far as the VA Mitchell's - Yes, I've pulled them up on census's and tax records and seen them in printed county histories - but unless I could have found a WILL where an adult named a son as "Hinchey" then I can't prove it - however, all the census show for my Hinchey Mitchell, that he was born in VA and in 1775 - His wife was shown as just the letter "M" and she was born 1781 SC - The Eleanor Thomasson who married WILLIAM Mitchell (Margaret's ancestor) who was to have been son of the ARW soldier out of GA named "Thomas", had a sister named Margaret Thomasson - She was to have married William's brother, named JOHN Mitchell and migrated to Alabama (according to their ancestry tree) - I've not found data on John Mitchell and Margaret Thomasson in St Clair AL - If any of you have, then please let me know! What I can tell all of you (from my research), is there were Mitchell's in early GA records before the ARW - Around 5 adult Thomas's. My Hinchey Mitchell named a son Thomas and the name has come down through our Mitchell ancestry - However, within the Margaret Mitchell tree, I saw no Thomas Mitchell's coming from the "Thomas" Mitchell and the "Mary Ann Barnett" thru 1Thomas - 2William - 3Isaac Green - 4Russell Crawford - 5Eugene Muse (Margaret's father) - The ancestry tree was compiled by Eugene Muse Mitchell, March 1930 - I have a copy which is also in the GA Archives, "Mitchell Papers" and also from, "History of Clayton County, GA 1821-1983", page 245. Here is the first part of the ancestry tree as shown by Eugene Muse Mitchell, March 1930 - MITCHELL FAMILY, ATLANTA GEORGIA - THOMAS MITCHELL, Land Surveyor, Revolutionary Soldier, married Mary Ann BARNETT, daughter of William BARNETT - (Their issue) - 1. WILLIAM MITCHELL - born Dec 8, 1777 died Feb 24, 1859, married Eleanor THOMASSON. 2. ISAAC MITCHELL** - married Eleanor BURTON. 3. JOHN MITCHELL - married Margaret THOMASSON. 4. ELIZABETH MITCHELL - married George PRITCHETT, July 26, 1807. 5. HANNAH MITCHELL - spinster. 6. MARGARET MITCHELL - married William WATTS. 7. MARY MITCHELL - married John HARPER. ** Isaac's middle name was GREEN, he was shown to be a Methodist Protestant Minister, born May 23, 1810 and died Oct 1881, married three times - first to Mary Ann DUDLEY - Isaac Green Mitchell lived very close to my Mitchell family in Henry and then Clayton County GA - My great grandmother, Delia W. Mitchell Kyle (born 1875) spoke often of this branch of Mitchell and knowing of Isaac, mentioning that he was a preacher, among other stories, which obviously she heard from her father (Jim Mitchell) - her daugher, (my grandmother), Sarah "Maude" Kyle Ogletree (born 1897) also told me stories of Margaret Mitchell, saying she was a playmate of her's and her cousin. At the time, I really didn't think much about it, but it was common knowledge that we were related to Margaret Mitchell author of GWTW - This is what later (1979) sent me to Henry County Courthouse and the GA Archives, to find more data - However, what I found was no proof that Margaret's direct ancestor was the "Thomas" Mitchell they name as their ancstor, who was a Surveyor in GA and died at the Lowe farm in McDonough (Henry Co) GA - I am of the opinion that it could very well have been a "William" rather than a "Thomas" Mitchell and of whom married a Mary Barnett - if any of you can add further information, please do! Your corrections and comments are most welcome! Furthermore, I would add, the earlier Mitchell's who appear in the land records of Henry County GA (founded 1821) could have been also connected to the Mitchell's above - I'll post futher infomation in another message. Thanks! MaryJean
