Hi Doris, Reference - Elizabeth Dooley Mitchell - Lt Thomas Mitchell of the ARW - No problem! The story of Thomas and Elizabeth Mitchell's estate was told to me by the noted historian and author, Robert Scott Davis Jr. - I had been corresponding with about 10 Mitchell descendants from varius branches and a some of them were also seeking info or verification regarding the known adult "Thomas Mitchells" out of early GA - Wilkes, Lincoln, Greene counties and other in GA - pre ARW - There seemed to have been about 5 of them before the ARW and that was my intention, to see if I could separate them - Family tradition in my family has persisted, that we descend from Thomas Mitchell who would have been born about 1755 or earlier - who married a Mary Ann Barnett - This was my reason for going into Wilkes County research - to confirm who he was and his family - However, easier said than done! From discussing the various "Thomas Mitchell's" (adult) from this area of GA, it's complicated and tradition is mainly the cause - however, I believe in family tradition, there is always a kernal of truth. For instance, Margaret Mitchell's (GWTW) ancestry was to have been of a Thomas Mitchell who married Mary Ann Barnett - He was to have been a LT in the ARW - receiving land grants due to his service - The "Mitchell Papers" which can be seen in the GA Archives (of which I've studied) name the same land grants of which Lt Thomas Mitchell who married Elizabeth Dooley, received for his service in the ARW. Those who descend from the same Mitchell family as Margaret Mitchell have this tradition - However, I believe it is in error as it has no proof to back it up, considering the documents (original copies) and book records which don't confirm - This Thomas was to have been a Surveyor in GA and while travelling into Henry County GA, he died at the Lowe Farm and was to have been buried there - that in itself was odd to me. Henry County (founded 1821) has land entries (original copies) for several adult Mitchell's, but no Thomas - I'll publish those here and see if any of the list members know of these Mitchell's - I also found in the Walton Co records (I'll verifity it was Walton, I'm doing this from memory), a WILLIAM Mitchell who married a MARY BARNETT - Could their tradition of a "Thomas", actually have been a WILLIAM? William Mitchell (adult) bought land in Henry County which was in the town of McDonough along with several other Mitchell's and also a Joseph P.Green who most likely connects to me as well - Apparently the land was a lot in the town square and was to be used for a church. As for Elizabeth Dooley Mitchell - I'll try to find all the data I have on her and the unusual wording in the "Wilkes County GA Papers" about the estate - Thanks for writing and if any of you (list subscribers) know anything about these branches, please give us your opinon and comments.
