    1. [MITCHELL] Greenberry Mitchell/William Mitchell

    3. Maryjean - Actually the name Greenberry isn't as uncommon as you would think. I have come across several by that name and many in TN which has caused a lot of confusion among those of us researching our Mitchell family. I have no clue as to where the name originated within our family. One of our mysteries is that we don't know the name of William Mitchell's wife. He is our oldest known family member, born in 1764 in Chester County, PA. With a common name like William Mitchell it has been difficult to trace. We are almost positive they married in Virginia and that she died in Grainger County, TN but we haven't located a grave for her. Old William, as we call him, left Grainger County, TN in 1815 with his oldest son, James, and traveled to Kentucky. James stayed in Kentucky while William travelled on to Missouri. We suspect his wife died prior to this time. Old William can be found in the 1830 and 1850 Missouri census records and he died in late 1852 or early 1853. We haven't been able to locate his grave either although I have been told there is a cemetery on land he used to own and he could be buried there.
