Yes, many of the Mitchell family of Lunenburg Co. Va. and Granville Co. N.C. went to those areas of S.C. We have several from that area who have had their dna tested and would really welcome members of this family so we could compare results. I saw this in Somebody's Links newsletter and thought I would post it in case there is someone on the list researching Virginia Mitchells. Portraits of an unknown Army officer and what is presumed to be his wife were discovered and purchased from an antique/ pawn shop in Virginia via an auction on eBay. The buyer contacted me by e-mail on 12 October 2002, hoping that he might find a clue to the subjects in the portraits in the Virginia MITCHELLs. You may see the portraits at this link: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mitchell001/mys_photo.html If you would like further information, please let me know. G'day Fran Sorry I have never heard of Judy Webster Central Register. Would she (or it) be in Queensland only? You seem to be getting along like a house on fire - I have been on the 1881 on-line-census site. I also have the 1881 Census Discs but I can't read them on my Apple. The discs have more information so I take them to my local Neighbourhood House and use their computors. What a world we live in. Now I've got More medical problems and I was going so well too. but we will overcome them too. Is there a problem with the MITCHELL list? I haven't received anything since August 13. I've tried to resubscribe 3 or 4 times but still haven't received anything? Thank you, Gary Mitchell
Doris, All documents we have, including extractions from Sprakel's book on the Boone family, indicate that Daniel Boone had only one sister named Elizabeth. Elizabeth married William Grant and their daughter Marry Grant married Moses Mitchell on 3/27/1775. Moses and Mary did have a son also named Moses, b. 12/8/1790. There are other Moses Mitchells in the same time periods, but none we can find connected to the Boones. I would be most interested in viewing the documents in your possession. Can you either scan them and email them to smm@focalpointlights.com or mail them to my home, address below. Thank you! ........................................... Here goes: Moses Mitchell was the son of Sir Gavin Mitchell and Margaret Campbell, daughter of the 8th Duke of Argyle. Gavin came to America in 1736 with 6 sons 4 daughters, and a son-in-law, and grandchildren totalling 70 persons. John Mitchell, son of Gavin and brother of Moses built the first mill on Tidewater on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia and died therein 1760. In 1762 Mose and his mother removed to the Yadkin district of NC with a colony of Presbyterians under Rev. Robert Hall. Moses married Mary Grant(1) and Elizabeth Boone(2), sister of Daniel Boone. *notes are fuzzy here--mention of a Rebecca Boone, apparently Daniel's wife, was pregnant and persuaded Daniel to leave Yadkin NC because of attacks by the Cherokees. Daniel left and went off to VA. * Now this is confusing---there is also mention of an Elizabeth Boone married to William Grant. It states that William Grant and his party immigrated to KY in 1779. He built a fort at Bryon Station. Moses Mitchell then married Dilly Greer in 1800. When Dilly died he married Elizabeth Grant (1801), so Dilly may have died during childbirth. Elizabeth is the sister of 1st wife Mary Grant. To them was born Edmond Mitchell, Esq. He was a high sherrif of North Iredell and a tax collector. He married Sarah Mayberry. After Sarah's death he married Nancy Salmond. (Iredell co.) So does this mean that Daniel Boone had 2 sisters named Elizabeth? This article states that Moses married Elizabeth Boone sister of Daniel, and that an Elizabeth Boone sisiter of Daniel also marries a William Grant. Let me know what you think.
