Richard, If your MITCHELL wasn't able to read or write and the names were written as the enumerator 'heard' them pronounced. Hence, MITCHELL, MITCHEL, MITSHELL,..etc. I have found my mother's name written several different ways. I don't know why as the whole family was literate. I guess no one thought to check the spelling that the enumerator wrote down. My husband's ancestor had 4 different spellings as he could not read/write. His wife left a good paper trail because it took her 3 years to get her pension. She had to get several people to testify/write that they knew this man was the same person. Sometimes initials are hard to read if the handwriting isn't very good or if it is quite fancy with a lot of loops and curves. I have found ages varied also. One man had PA as to where born, next time was Un Known, and the third time was Kentucky. This is the one that married 3 times and all wives named Mary. There are several wiser peoples on this list, maybe they can help you also. Shirley, Thank you for the thought, that could be very true! Do you think that James's middle initial, only recorded on the 1850 census, could have been wrong or changed? What do you make out of Mitchell changing to Mitchel? Thank You for responding, Richard ____________________________________ In a message dated 2/7/03 12:39:10 AM Eastern Standard Time, Livedove@aol.com writes: << ohn, maybe the first Sarah listed died and he remarried another Sarah. Mitchell List, Is any one tracking a William Mitchell from Indiana, Parke County? He had a son James the same age as my great grandfather born in Indiana. In the 1880 census James was no longer listed in Parke County, my great grandfather James D. was married in Elkhart County Indiana, December 25, 1878, and then moved on to Michigan. James D. listed in the Michigan census, his Father & Mother born in Indiana. The differences are, the middle initial and on the 1860 census, William's name changed from Mitchell to Mitchel? Definitely not the same generation. It is just interesting how the same names run through these Mitchell families. And there were a number of them in Tennessee too. Does anyone have information on Anna Mitchell who was married to Alex Kegg. They had at least three children: Mary Ellen (Lally), Joseph Alex Kegg, and Thomas Vincent Kegg. Thomas Vincent Kegg is my great-great grandfather (married to Lydia P. Reckner) and lived in Uniontown, PA. Thanks -- Kerri
Searching for information on relatives of Gertrude Viola MITCHELL. She was born in 1887 in possibly Indiana and died July 2, 1966 in Dodgeville, Iowa Co., WI. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg, LaFayette Co., WI. On August 8, 1906, she married my great-grandfather George William HUGHES in Michigan. She was also married to a Robert HEATER (sp?). Her dad is believed to be Albert MITCHELL (no dates available) and her sibling are: Gaylen, Harold, Guy, LeRoy, Kate, Helen, Grace, and Ivan. Any help on this mystery is greatly appreciated!
Since we seem to be talking about Kentucky and Tennessee Mitchell's I thought I would once again submit my brick wall. I am looking for in the information on Calvin Thomas Mitchell, called Peter. Calvin Thomas was born about 1829 somewhere in Tennessee, married Mary E. Nanny in 1855, in Butler County, Kentucky. Calvin and Mary lived and raised their three children, Nancy E., Elias Matthew, and Missouri Ellen, in Muhlenberg and Todd County, Kentucky. In the 1860 Muhlenberg Census Calvin Thomas (Peter) Mitchell is called Peter C. Mitchell and in the 1870 Muhlenberg Census he is called C.T. Mitchell. In the information on Calvin Thomas (Peter) Mitchell would be great. One of my Elijah's older brothers was also James but he was born in Virginia. The family moved to TN but in 1816 James and his father, William, left Grainger County, TN and travelled in Kentucky and Illinios. William ended up in Madison County, Missouri but James returned to TN but I think on the western side. He isn't my direct line so I don't know quite as much about him.
