Connie, The Calvin Mitchell in my line was born in Greene County, but around 1900, he and his older brother, William, left Tennessee for Gas City, Indiana, where they are both buried. As far as I can tell, William Mitchell never married. Larkin Mitchell was in Greene County in the 1900 census but disappeared after that, not a clue on him. John, George, and David are buried in Greene County. I think the other brother, Thomas is buried there also, but he is still a mystery. I was hoping that because the names were so much alike in some of the other Mitchell families, some one might make a connection. James Mitchell who was the father of this bunch of Mitchell's, was married to Martha Stokes. Both of them are buried in Greene County. James Mitchell's father, I think, was Thomas Mitchell who according to the 1880 Greene County census, was married to a lady who was born in Ireland. She may have been a Tucker, but no proof on that either. Thomas was listed as having been born in Virginia. We need more Mitchell's to take the DNA test, wish some more would. The answers are there, just need some more input. It certainly does not hurt and the idea of finally finding some one to help break down that wall, was enough for me to join. Keep me and my Mitchell's in mind when you are doing your search, I will appreciate any info that comes my way. Tony
I do not believe it was a tax list as it list some children that are only a few years old. One must remember the latest date on that list was 1829. Before the treaty of Dancing Rabbit - 1830, much of the land in TN and MS was Indian Land. After 1830, the Indians were given a short time to leave and move West. After that time, people were allowed into lands that they had not been allowed to claim before. Many rushed in - as they later did in what was called West Indian Terrritory (now OK) when that was also taken from the Indians. Between the years of 1829 and 1850 is a long time for a lot of people not only to enter, but also have children - and most families had a lot of children then. It is unreal how Houston, TX has changed in the last 20 years. We look at the history of any area to understand why and how it changes. Some areas change slowly and some quickly. Someone can surely help me locate the person's that posted information on my grandfather Lewis Eley Mitchell. They posted on Ancestry World Tree Poject: Complete Family Tree. I need to contact Joyce Zinkowich or Judy Williams. HELP PLEASE. EDNA
I guess the real problem in my family is that I have one Mitchell uncle who has absolutely no interest in his Mitchell heritage. A couple of years ago I found out that I had a half Mitchell uncle by my grandfather's first marriage. Unfortunately he was in very poor health and within 5 months of my learning about him he passed away. He had 4 sons who while interested in knowing about their Mitchell family aren't interested in having the DNA test. I've sent them the DNA information several times and get no response. So from my line, no takers! Tony: See the posting I just sent. It lists some of my Mitchells in Grainger County in early 1800s. There is a Calvin but none of the other names. I don't know if any of them went to Greene County. I'll try to post the earlier line later tonight or this weekend. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tony and Pat Mitchell" <tpptc@bellsouth.net> To: <MITCHELL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 1:43 PM Subject: [MITCHELL] James Mitchell, Grainger County > Connie, > And all of the other Grainger County Mitchell researchers. You just have to know my family. It's a hopeless cause with them. I have too many other avenues to pursue with my family histories. I have another clue to my Lewis Eley Mitchell. His mother may not have been Peggy Jenkinsand the county as far a LDS has listed was Carl co.Missouri.Listed his father as Jim Mitchell and his mother as Clara.I was told by someone from Missouri that it was Carroll Co.because there was no Carl co in Missouri. My Queation about that is can the county change from 1869 to present date? Also does tie in with these Mitchell names ? Thank you all for any help that you gave, or that you can give me. EDNA
While going through files in Hardeman co Tenn searching another line I found buried there a Robert Mitchell b16Jan1795..d22May1875. His wife Letitia Moore Mitchell b12Feb1805 d25Dec1879. The line I was searching tied in with my Mitchell line in Lawrence Co Indiana. It would be nice to make a connection with these Mitchells. Anyone help make this possable? cheers
Hi Tony, There was a James C. Mitchell in Greene Co., TN who moved to Marion Co. TN. He was an attorney. I believe his mother was Mary Coffield, and father was either James or John Mitchell. I think he was somehow connected to my Mitchells, but I am not sure. Doris
Connie: I did not feel like I should ask my Mitchell kin to pay for this, because I was the one really interested in the information, and they aren't as anxious as I am to find the connection. So, I guess I will only ask the one surviving male Mitchell in my line to do the test from the kit when I order it. That shouldn't be asking too much of him. The idea of asking for a donation sounds like a great idea, and wouldn't burden any one person with the entire amount. Hi Conni A lot of people would not pay $100 but might pay $10 or $20 towards someone in the family (male) being tested - offer it as your christmas/birthday gift from them. And ask females as well as males to participate with this fund raising. The more donors the less the individual needs to pay. Make a list. Offer them a copy of the Pedigree. My family just won't participate in the DNA study. I've asked and they just aren't interested. My father would have done it but he died in 1991. His brother is the only Mitchell uncle and he won't do it nor will my 4 newly discovered cousins. Too bad they can't test some of the women. Hi I would love to hear from any one who knows anything about the family of Daniel Mitchell from Iowa. Who had a son called Darwin who married a lady from Illinois and was living in Chicago at the time of the 1930 US Census. Regards Thomas Peeke -- Thomas Peeke
Doris, I don't remember the query, either. But the James married to Lucy in Sumner Co Tn 1850 census is mine. There are no Henry's in that line at all. This James is son of John Mitchell and Fanny Busby who were both born in North Carolina and married in Sumner Co. in 1808. Their other sons were John and Major. ============================ Aneita Mitchell Allen - aneitaa@hotmail.com Mitchell DNA project http://users.sisna.com/jimmitch/Mitchell%20Chart%20w%20text.htm ============================ >From: MITCHDOR@aol.com >Reply-To: MITCHELL-L@rootsweb.com >To: MITCHELL-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [MITCHELL] 1850 TN census- James Mitchell >Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2003 11:13:57 EST > > I don't remember who requested a look up on James married to Lucy in TN. >I >found 2 James, one married to Lucy and one married to Lucinda, but there >was >not a son, Henry, in the household. > Doris > > >==== MITCHELL Mailing List ==== >Searchable archives at >http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=MITCHELL _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
