    2. Hi Marti, One more thing I forgot - Luckily for me, I've seen original copies (not on microfilm) from the Clayton and Henry County Courthouses with reference to my ancestor, Hinchey Mitchell - While it was sometimes spelt as Hinchie, it was mostly spelt as Hinchey - His son and several grandsons carried his name as well - His 1863 Will is on record in 1863 Clayton Co GA - Land records were in Henry and Clayton Co's of GA when Henry Co was founded, 1821 - His name was spelt as "Hinchey" in the History of Walton County - also the census and tax records for Walton, Clark, Henry and Clayton Counties of GA - His name was consistant in the spelling - As was the Hinchey Mitchell from VA - SC and into Tuscaloosa AL who died there in 1820 and left a will - According to the printed sources I've seen - his tombstone says "Hinchey" Mitchell - Thanks again. MaryJean

    1. Re: [MITCHELL] Edward Mitchell of VA/SC and GA - (From MaryJean Childress Voe...
    2. Hi Marti, Not sure which one you mean, but..as for the christian name of "Hinchey", well, there were two of um' - My ancestor and the Hinchey Mitchell born 1772 VA who migrated from Edgefield SC to Tuscaloosa AL - I tracked him from SC to AL from original copies of documents - The other, John "Hinckley" Mitchell is well documented in Charleston SC - And while I thought he might be my "Hinchey" with a variant, it was consistantly (documentation) as John "Hinckley" Mitchell of Charleston SC - My cousin lived in Charleston about 10 years ago, she (paternally) descends from the Governor Daniell of SC (pre-ARW) and did extensive work on the Mitchells in that area and in SC - So, she gathered original copies of everything she could locate on anything which named Hinchey Mitchell - Starling - John Hinckley Mitchell and the other's who show in the census's, deeds and etc - I have original copies of deeds and census's from SC for Mitchell - Plus printed data (books, etc) and cemetery records from both SC and AL - While I live in GA - There were a number of Mitchell's here needless to say! Many of them came out of SC and into GA - There were around three to four adult Thomas Mitchell's in GA pre-ARW - Several are well documented which would include the Mitchell family who connect to the "Branch" ancestry - Then the David Mitchell who was Governor of GA - Also the Thomas Mitchell, ARW soldier out of Wilkes Co GA who married Elizabeth Dooley - he has been confused with several other lineages, but according to the Wilkes County Courthouse papers I personally researched (in Wilkes) - He died with two children and his wife Elizabeth was from the celebrated Dooley family in that area - She is surrounded in mystery however, as it was reported that her deceased husband's will was burned right in front of her in the attorney's office - Her deceased husband's lands taken from her bit by bit - and she fled on horseback with Thomas Bibb to KY - Her son was also named Thomas and he took care of the rest of her estate which had belonged to his father, Thomas Mitchell, ARW soldier out of Wilkes Co GA - See Robert Scott Davis's books on Early GA Records - And I certainly do know about the variants in names, we do have to allow for it, that's for certain! I will also say, I saw STERLING and STARLING Mitchell in SC records and in GA records - before 1800 - Any information from this list would be most welcome or any comments. Thanks for writing! MaryJean

    2. Yep, Mary Jean..I have an Isham Garrison who we are almost positive was listed as Hysom, several times...If you get the original census you might be able to see if it could have been transcribed wrong. Marti

    2. Hello List, Correction reference STARLING MITCHELL in my message - Should have read, Greenville Co SC - not GREEN CO, SC - I plan to check my files for further information to confirm a descendant's interest in this branch of Mitchell - As far as I know, I don't descend from this line, but have no proof that my Hinchey Mitchell, born 1775 VA did not connect thru a common ancestor - If any of you descend from Hinchey Mitchell born 1772 VA and who migrated to Tuscaloosa AL where he died 1820 - and you know for certian that he was indeed the son of Edward Mitchell, then please confirm - This "Hinchey" Mitchell is not my ancestor - But, he does have the unusual christian name of "Hinchey" - To my knowledge, there were no other's (Mitchell) with the name for those birthdates. I have seen several in the SC area (Charleston) named HINCKLEY, but not HINCHEY. Thanks - MaryJean Childress Voegtlin

    1. Re: [MITCHELL] Wm. Mitchell b. 1774
    2. Hi Marlene, There were Mitchell's in White County, TN in the early 1800's and descendants live there today. My ggrandmother was, Eliza Ann Mitchell (b. abt. 1846 in White Co), descendant of Spencer Sterling Mitchell (1775-1849) and Rachel Roberts. Unfortunately, the computer I keep my genealogy files in is acting strangely, and I'm waiting for a computer guru to fix it before I mess it up even more. I know I have lots of William Mitchell's, but don't know if I have yours. The name Nancy Dyer rings a bell. Joab Mitchell and Jubel B. Hancock do not sound familiar to me. What was the name of the niece to married Jubel? I'm happy to share info when I get my computer up and running again. Please keep in touch. Sandy Field ShemyaSandy@aol.com

    1. [MITCHELL] David Mitchell of Washington Co./Knox Co. TN son of John Mitchell
    2. I am searching for information on my great great grandfather David Mitchell the son of John Mitchell of Washington Co. TN. David was married twice 1st marriage was to Minerva Duggan and 2nd marriage is to Sally Stephens/Stevens.David and Sally are the parents of my great grandfather William M. Mitchell born 1883 in Sevierville TN David Mitchell died in Knoxville, TN( I found grave at Woodlawn Cemetery) He was born July 1832 and died June 27, 1913 at the age of 81. Since death certificates/records was not started until 1914, this leaves a big gap in my search since I can't get a death certificate which is a bummer. I have noticed that my MITCHELL family traveled through the Washington Co. TN area through Cocke Co., Sevier Co., Blount Co. and Knox Co. TN. I have searched and come up with the name of John Mitchell and Elizabeth Coppinger as his parents. If there is anyone with information on David Mitchell and his parents or siblings I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You Jenny Mitchell

    1. [MITCHELL] Edward Mitchell of VA/SC and GA - (From MaryJean Childress Voegtlin)
    2. Hi List, There's been discussion on the various branches of Mitchell in Georgia - I located some long ago (1985) group sheets and thought to share them with you. Comments welcome...and perhaps some of the data will help those looking for this branch of Mitchell - I would enjoy knowing more, due to a christian name which appears in my own branch of Mitchell (HINCHEY) - EDWARD MITCHELL died 1811 in Wilkerson Go GA - he married ELIZABETH who died 1819 -- This could be the Edward who shows in the very early census's for the 96th District of SC, Edgefield Co SC - Also questioned - Could this Edward be the son of Thomas Mitchell of VA and SC? - Issue as I know it - 1. STARLING MITCHELL - appeared on the 1790 - 1810 Edgefield Co SC Tax and Census records - unless there were two of them - Also in the tax list for Green Co SC, page 029, 1797 - 2. NANCY MITCHELL - married Abraham Brooks Lucus and died in MS 3. CHARLES MITCHELL - 4. HINCHEY MITCHELL- born 1772 VA, died in Tuscaloosa AL, Aug 18th, 1820 - Lived in Edgefield Co SC, perhaps married more than once, but known marriage was to - Rachel, who is on a deed with Hinchey, in SC- He left an 1820 WILL in Tuscaloosa, Book 1, page 13 - His legatees are named, some in the WILL and some in miscellaneous records at various times - Wife - Rachel, sons Zadock, Jabez, Edward T; daughters, Lucretia, Sophia and Sophronia?, Some children were minors when the will was written according to - "Alabama Records", Pauline Jones Gandrud, from a set of 245 Volumes of which I saw in the Macon Library, Macon GA - but should be available in any large genealogical facility - NOTE - I followed this Hinchey (above) from SC into GA - Mainly because of his Christian name - My ancestor was ALSO, Hinchey Mitchell, born 1775 VA and he appears in the Clarke Co GA tax records for 1809 - and then into Henry and Clayton Counties of GA - I found it incrediable, that both would have the SAME name - Very unusal name - which is actually "Hennessy or Henessy" (Irish) - But.. to find two with the same unusual christian name, born about the same time and in VA, well - confusing and unusal - I have thought perhaps they were both connected thru a common ancestor. 5. THOMAS MITCHELL - 6. EDWARD MITCHELL NOTE - This branch apparently lived in SC, Edgefield Distract - I found them in early census's for SC - I would also recommend the Robert Scott Davis books on early GA. Also, "Wayfarers in Walton" by A.B. Sams, pub. 1967 - first reported in the NC Genealogical Soc. Journal, Vol VII (1981), No 2 - has a story which they called "bizarre" of Walton Co GA (Robert Scott Davis) and this part of GA WAS NC - I did find in the book, lists of those living in the disputed part of GA or NC, whichever were claiming it's boundries - of an AND (Andrew?) MITCHELL living there and in his HH were 12 or 13 (whites) - Let me hear from those of you who know something about this branch of Mitchell - I have more on them - MaryJean
