    3. Hi Judy, The answer to your question about Greer's or Hampton's being listed in the members of the Dutchman's Creek Baptist Church is Greer's maybe, Hampton's no. The handwriting is very hard to read and the spelling is often incorrect. Some of the names are very hard to decipher. Also, some of the names appear twice because the minutes were recopied. This a particular problem for the Greer's listed. The first time the names appear, it looks like Greer. The second time, it looks like Green. When I could not find a deciphered list, I began working to make a list myself. While doing this, I compared the names with names in the 1787 Wilkes County, North Carolina Tax List. I recently found a listed published in Wilcoxson and Allied Familes, compiled and published by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, privately printed by Commerical Service, Waterbury, Connecticut, 1958. Dorothy Wulfeck gives credit to Lucy M. Evans for the transcription of the original minutes included in her publication.! I also used this in compiling my list. Unfortunately, when I visited Wake Forest several years ago, I did not photocopy the entire document so my list may not be complete. However, my list does contain more names than the one compiled by Lucy Evans. I hesitate to print my list because I am not a handwriting expert and I would not want to print something which is incorrect. I also disagree with a few of the names as deciphered by Lucy Evans. However, I believe that this list may hold the clue to my Mitchell ancesters and have included the names as best as Lucy Evans and I could deciper them. 3. I also am very interested in the discussion concerning the Mitchells of Wilkes County, NC. My ancestor, William Riley Mitchell (7MAR1807-29APR1873) came from Hunting Creek, Wilkes Co., NC. In my limited research the only Mitchells I found from around the Hunting Creek area are William, Sr.; William, Jr.; in Wilkes County and Moses who lived on Hunting Creek in Iredell County which abuts Wilkes County on the south. No one asked for my opinion, BUT---The most important step in genealogy is the recording of your sources. I can not emphasize enough the importance of recording the sources. I am very interested in corresponding with anyone concerning the MITCHELLs of Wilkes County who can and will also supply their sources. Thanks, Virginia Mitchell vmitch@upperspace.net

    2. Moses Mitchell was the son of John Mitchell. John, I believe, was the son of Sir Gavin Mitchell. Moses also named a son of his Moses, so it is rather confusing. They migrated to KY. Doris

    3. Gary.....The story line is that Sir Gavin Mitchell married Margaret Campbell, daughter of eighth Duke of Argyle. Gavin came to America in 1732, with his six sons, four daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, seventy persons in all. His son, John Mitchell, who died in 1760, married Lilas Morton (1730), who was, presumably, the daughter of Lord John Morton of Scotland. Lilas married, second, James Stuart. John Mitchell built the first mill on the tidewater of the Schuylkill River, Pa., and there died in 1760. His son, Moses (born about 1750), in 1762, with his mother, removed from Pennsylvania to the Yadkin River in North Carolina, with a colony of Presbyterians under the Rev. Robert Hall. Moses Mitchell married, about 1771, Mary Grant, daughter of William Grant and his wife, Elizabeth Boone born Dec. 5, 1732, sister of Daniel Boone. I have a copy of an article given to me by another researcher that cites the above...... I've done considerable research on the Mitchell-Boone connection trying to connect my Mitchell's to the Boone's, but to no avail. Spraker's book on Daniel Boone references the Moses Mitchell-Mary Grant marriage with their issue and Paul Smithey has done even more considerable work on these two lines as he descends from Gavin Mitchell. He was critical to my research which, unfortunately, ran in to brick wall for me. I'll see if I can dig up Paul's email address for you. He's a GREAT resource on this.... 3. Gary, were there any Greer's or Hampton's listed in that church record? If so, it may help us determine or negate possible relationships. Does anyone have any information which explains if or how any of them are related? How is Moses Mitchell related to Sir Gavin Mitchell? Is he his son? Does anyone have any information about the family of Sir Gavin Mitchell? I have seen a lot of information about a son, John, but not Moses.
