Just throught I'd let those of you on the list know that one of my most persistent dead ends has now been solved. My 4th great grandfather, Theodore KENT, has been found buried in Highland Cemetery, Highland Township, Oakland Co., MI. The transcription reads as follows: > Theodore Kent, d. 16 Sept. 1884, ae 92y, 1m, 2d, > s/o Daniel and Lucy Kent, m. ____ > According to The Kent Family History (by Margery Gripon Norris of Austin, TX), Theodore was born 14 August, 1792 at Dorset, Bennington Co., VT, the last child of six born to Rev. Daniel Kent and his first wife, Abigail SIKES/SYKES. (Unfortunately, Theodore's MI death record incorrectly lists his mother as Lucy Kent. Fortunately, his age at death, when subtracted from his date of death, corresponds exactly with his known date of birth.) Abigail Sykes Kent died on 18 August, 1792, probably from puerperal fever. On 9 June, 1793, Daniel married 2. Betsy GRISWOLD and fathered eight more children by her. Dan Kent fought in the Revolutionary War with the Green Mountain Rangers under Colonel Ira Allen and Captain Seth Warner. In 1792, he became the first settled Congregational minister for Benson, Rutland Co., VT, serving the entire 36 years of his pastoral career there. Theodore Kent married Lucy ARNOLD 14 November, 1813 in Benson. As Theodore's father was the Congregational minister there, it seems fairly likely that he married the couple. Theodore and Lucy had nine known children: Elijah W. (married Amanda D. MORGAN); Lucy (Mrs. Oliver W. WILCOX); George W. (married Mary CONNER); Horatio; Artemus; Susan (married WARD?); Mary Antoinette (married SELLIC or SELLECK?); Daniel (married Elizabeth REAM); and Eudora Alice (my 3rd great grandmother...married 1. Warren Ward NICHOLS, 2. Enos TWITCHELL.) Of these children, it is known that Elijah, Lucy, George W., Daniel and Eudora came to Michigan. Elijah W. Kent, who came there in 1847, is also buried in the Highland Cemetery. Lucy Kent Wilcox, her husband and George W. Kent are buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Nottawa Twp., St. Joseph Co., MI. Daniel and Elizabeth Kent are buried in Fife Lake, Grand Traverse Co., MI. Eudora Kent Nichols Twitchell is buried in the Centreville Cemetery, Centreville, St. Joseph Co., MI. It is known that Theodore and Lucy (Arnold) Kent came to Michigan at some point between 1850 and 1860. In 1850, they can be found living in Hubbardton, Rutland Co., VT. By 1860, they are resident in Marcellus, Cass Co., MI. Son Daniel and his bride, Elizabeth, are living in the same household. By 1870, Daniel, Elizabeth and their daughter, Alla, had moved to Centreville, St. Joseph Co. and Theodore, age 77, was living with them. No date of death or burial has yet been discovered for Lucy Arnold Kent, but I am fairly sure that she must have died at some point before the census was taken in 1870. Although I have searched for one, there appears to be no Michigan death record for her. If anyone has information on where Lucy Arnold Kent is interred, please contact me.
