EICKHOFF, 77, 325 W. Main St., died May 6, 1996, at the Three Rivers Area Hospital, following a long illness. He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Marne, a son of Martin and Lena (RUESSER) EICKHOFF. On Sept. 13, 1941, he married Margaret MYERS, in Lowell. She died April 18, 1994. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1934 and from Worsham Mortuary School in 1939. He served with the U.S. Army’s 42nd Rainbow Division in the European Theater during World War II. He and his wife moved to Mendon in 1947 and established the Eickhoff Funeral Home. He has been a member of the Michigan and National Funeral Directors Associations the past 57 years. He also was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Mendon, and had served on the church board and cemetery committee. He also had served on the Mendon Fire Department, the Mendon Township Library Board, the Mendon Village Council and St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Commission, the St. Joseph County Emergency Services Council, as Mendon Village President in the 1950s, and he was the charter secretary and past president of the Mendon Kiwanis Club. He also had owned and operated a Standard Oil Station, Mendon, form 1954-61; a hardware store from 1965-80; and established the Mendon Ambulance Service in! 1969. His favorite activities included the construction of many stone walls along the bank of the St. Joe River, deer hunting with his closest friends at Lake City, card games (especially pinochle), and bird watching. Surviving are seven children, Sue Ellen (Ken) SCHERER, Mount Clemens, Jon (Sue) EICKHOFF, Vicksburg, Martin (Connie) EICKHOFF, Rick (Susan) EICKHOFF, Dale (Vicki) EICKHOFF, all of Mendon, Tom (Lisa) EICKHOFF, Fenton, and Lynn Marie EICKHOFF, Holland; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Irma RICHMOND, Ruby CHRISTIANSEN, Josephine WILLARD and Marie (Bob) STEWARD, all of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Erhart and Harvey; and two sisters, Roxie SULLIVAN and Thelma ROTH. Relatives and friends may call from 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. 9 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home, Mendon, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday. The funeral mass is at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Catholic Church, Mendon, with the Rev. Joseph Thachet officiating. Burial will be in St. Edward Catholic Cemetery with full military rites being conferred by the Snow-Hasbrouck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4898, Mendon. Memorials may be directed to the St. Edward Catholic Church for masses, to Reed River Park for tree benches, or to the Three Rivers Area Hospital Auxiliary for equipment.
