ROOT, BRANDANMOUR, BRANDAMOUR, MOUTAW, TOMLINSON, McCLISH, LIGHTHISER George S. ROOT, son of Prudent ROOT and Elnora BRANDANMOUR ROOT, was born at Roxton Falls, Canada, May 10th, 1845 and died at his home near Mendon, February 25, 1928, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 15 days. He was the last of a family of thirteen children. At the age of 12 years he left the parental home to live with a brother Charles, at Brattleboro, Vermont, where he attended school and learned the harness makers trade. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1861 and served as a harness maker in the Civil War until mustered out in August, 1864. Later he came to Michigan, where he was married to Lucy Ann MOUTAW, May 20th, 1869. In June of the same year, Mr. and Mrs. ROOT, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert MOUTAW, joined a wagon train bound for the west. They took up claims in Kansas, stayed the necessary five years and returned to Michigan, with the exception of five years spent near Jackson, they have since resided in or near the village of Mendon. There survives the widow, four children, Mrs. Mary TOMLINSON and Mrs. Katherine McCLISH of Mendon; Mrs. Virginia LIGHTHISER of Leonidas; George Herbert ROOT of Jacksonville, Florida. Eleven grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren are left. Second Clipping: George S. The remains were placed in the vault in Mendon cemetery until later, when burial will take place in the Laird cemetery.
