Hello everyone, I appologize if this isn't strictly along the lines of genealogy, but I wanted to send this note to notify those who've been in contact with a fellow searcher named George C. Watkins, as a way to assist his family in notifying everyone he's been in contact with. We moved recently and my address book was misplaced, so the only way I have to contact the family is via email through George's email addy. George had been researching the SAGER line, among others and the two of us found each other online in 98' and have been sharing information since. George C. Watkins (gwatkins@tctwest.net) was a distant cousin of mine through the Milliman line via marriage. And for those of you who didn't know him, he was a wonderful man and always very helpful. I've been searching the MILLIMAN line (among others) for many years now and used to subscribe to several lists, but had to take time off after the births of my 2 sons. I've recently started back up again, and wanted to send this note. I received an email from George's daughter Anna on Sunday, March 10th. Anna wanted to let everyone know that George passed away suddenly from cancer on Tuesday, March 5th and his funeral service was on Sat. March 8th. I'm sorry I don't have more information, that is all the note from Anna said. I sent a reply back, but haven't heard anything more yet. Like I said before, we moved recently and my address book was somehow misplaced, so I don't have the phone # or address for the family....if any of you have that info. please pass it along to me, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Barbara (Milliman) Slaby
There is a Moyer family now residing in Mendon, St. Joseph County, MI. The head of household is Paul. His parents were Vern and Fern, both deceased. Do any of these names ring a bell? Patricia
Just throught I'd let those of you on the list know that one of my most persistent dead ends has now been solved. My 4th great grandfather, Theodore KENT, has been found buried in Highland Cemetery, Highland Township, Oakland Co., MI. The transcription reads as follows: > Theodore Kent, d. 16 Sept. 1884, ae 92y, 1m, 2d, > s/o Daniel and Lucy Kent, m. ____ > According to The Kent Family History (by Margery Gripon Norris of Austin, TX), Theodore was born 14 August, 1792 at Dorset, Bennington Co., VT, the last child of six born to Rev. Daniel Kent and his first wife, Abigail SIKES/SYKES. (Unfortunately, Theodore's MI death record incorrectly lists his mother as Lucy Kent. Fortunately, his age at death, when subtracted from his date of death, corresponds exactly with his known date of birth.) Abigail Sykes Kent died on 18 August, 1792, probably from puerperal fever. On 9 June, 1793, Daniel married 2. Betsy GRISWOLD and fathered eight more children by her. Dan Kent fought in the Revolutionary War with the Green Mountain Rangers under Colonel Ira Allen and Captain Seth Warner. In 1792, he became the first settled Congregational minister for Benson, Rutland Co., VT, serving the entire 36 years of his pastoral career there. Theodore Kent married Lucy ARNOLD 14 November, 1813 in Benson. As Theodore's father was the Congregational minister there, it seems fairly likely that he married the couple. Theodore and Lucy had nine known children: Elijah W. (married Amanda D. MORGAN); Lucy (Mrs. Oliver W. WILCOX); George W. (married Mary CONNER); Horatio; Artemus; Susan (married WARD?); Mary Antoinette (married SELLIC or SELLECK?); Daniel (married Elizabeth REAM); and Eudora Alice (my 3rd great grandmother...married 1. Warren Ward NICHOLS, 2. Enos TWITCHELL.) Of these children, it is known that Elijah, Lucy, George W., Daniel and Eudora came to Michigan. Elijah W. Kent, who came there in 1847, is also buried in the Highland Cemetery. Lucy Kent Wilcox, her husband and George W. Kent are buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Nottawa Twp., St. Joseph Co., MI. Daniel and Elizabeth Kent are buried in Fife Lake, Grand Traverse Co., MI. Eudora Kent Nichols Twitchell is buried in the Centreville Cemetery, Centreville, St. Joseph Co., MI. It is known that Theodore and Lucy (Arnold) Kent came to Michigan at some point between 1850 and 1860. In 1850, they can be found living in Hubbardton, Rutland Co., VT. By 1860, they are resident in Marcellus, Cass Co., MI. Son Daniel and his bride, Elizabeth, are living in the same household. By 1870, Daniel, Elizabeth and their daughter, Alla, had moved to Centreville, St. Joseph Co. and Theodore, age 77, was living with them. No date of death or burial has yet been discovered for Lucy Arnold Kent, but I am fairly sure that she must have died at some point before the census was taken in 1870. Although I have searched for one, there appears to be no Michigan death record for her. If anyone has information on where Lucy Arnold Kent is interred, please contact me. Families thus far known to carry descendants from this line are: Wilcox, Thorne, Nichols, Shelly, Barnes, Blood, Skillman, Jaquays, Tase, Patrick, Romig, McClain, Gifford, Norten, Youells, Nevins, Tobler, Agosti/Straube, Ashby, Adkins, Bernhardt, Vickery, Briggs, Weatherwax, DeHaan, Graves, Musser and Heckelman. Could someone who will be going through St. Joseph Co. death records do a death look up for me on a Mary Moyer? She is found in book 3 page 135, and this book is deaths that occurred between 1912-1929. The Mary Moyer I am looking for was bn 1848 in Seneca Twp., Ontario Co. NY and was the daughter of Solomon and Clarissa Caroline (Lown) Puffer. Mary married Robert Moyer, s/o of Garret and Emily Moyer in St Joseph Co. MI in 1872. They had 2 children, Leafy V. (Moyer) Furman bn in 1874, and Clarence L. Moyer bn in 1877. The Moyer's lived in the Dakota's for a time before removing to Muskegon Co MI where Mary took over her father's farm and took care of her stepmother. Here she was also a teacher in her brother, Hiram's school, Puffer School (now called Reeths-Puffer School District). We find that Leafy married William Furman in Muskegon Co. in 1901, and Clarence was found here staying in a hotel in 1906. However, by 1911 the entire family disappears. They did not die in Muskegon County, and a Furman descendant of a brother of William's said she believed that William and Leafy moved to St Joseph County, MI. Any help in locating this family would be so very appreciated, and in turn if anyone needs help from Muskegon County, I would be more than happy to assist. Warm regards, June L. Beckwith

I'm another one who owes a debt of gratitude to Josie for all her hard work, especially in the Burr Oak area. She'll be missed. Mary Myers
The St Joseph County website is one of the BEST website's I have seen anywhere. It is simply outstanding. St. Joseph's is the home for many of my ancestor's, most of which I would not have known anything about but for the work of Josie Garzelloni and Denise. Her dedication and hard work has provided so much richness to my research. Martha Elmendorf
St Joseph County researchers, It is with great sadness and respect that I let you know of the passing of Josie Garzelloni this morning, 18 Feb 2002. If any of you have spent any time at the St Joseph Co., MI USGenWeb site, you will recognize Josie's name from being on many, many, (many) pages. I started the St Joseph Co., MI website in Oct of 1996 and soon after, in 1997, Josie contacted me about transcribing records for the site. Hour upon hour she spent, transcribing books and newspaper clippings for births, deaths, marriages, gleanings, notices and other important data to be forwarded for the website because she wanted to help St Joseph County researchers. She loved genealogy and helping others. It was Josie's wish that no services be held. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Herbert A. CAVANAGH taken at the Barrows Studio in Sturgis, Michigan. The photograph was probably taken in the 1890's and Herbert appears to be in his 30's at the time the photograph was taken. I'm hoping to locate someone in this family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I would appreciate any information about my ggg grandparents Nathan & Julia (Anders) WHIPPLE. They were married 1850 in Elkhart Co. IN and listed there in the 1850 census. Prior research lists him as settling in Elkhart in 1837 and building saw and flour mills. Their two daughters, I believe, were born in Stergest (Sturgis?) MI. Ida Amelia WHIPPLE b. 01/22/1857 and Henrietta - date unknown. They moved again to IN and then later to KS. There is also a John A. Whipple listed on the census. ANY connection or information would be most appreciated. (I am working with the researchers at the Whipple website as well...) Thank you! Victoria Homeier

Does anyone know if there was a mental hospital or any sort of "lock hospital" in White Pigeon in the 1865-1875 era? I am attempting to locate some information on an Eliza Thompson who died 26 March 1871 from an overdose of morphine. So far, I've been unable to locate a matching person on the 1870 census in St. Joseph County. This may be the gr-gr-gr-gr grandmother I've been trying to find and if she was in some sort of locked facility, would explain why she was not living with her husband and son (according to the 1870 census). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bryn Kildow

I am looking for information on Christian Buck born 1784 in Pennsylvania. He died after the 1850 census in St. Joseph County, Michigan. Two of his daughters Margaret and Nancy married in St. Joseph Michigan and soon after moved to BlackHawk County, Iowa. A son Samuel Buck married Margaret Barclay and also moved out to Black Hawk County, Iowa. Christian's eldest son John Buck married Catherine Williman and moved to Defiance/Williams Co. Ohio. It is this family that my husband is descended from. I would like to fill in the time gaps. When did the family move to Michigan? I also believe that John Buck moved to Defiance, OH because that's where his father-in-law Jacob Williman had settled. Any information on the families mentioned above will be appreciated. I also have a bit of information to share. Lori Fortner
I am looking for descendants of Amos BARNES related surnames are GOODENOUGH PASCO SIXBY and WYCOFF Amos moved to White Pigeon, between 1835 and 1840 where he shows up there in the 1840 census He came from Cato, Cayuga, County New York where he was probably born in 1789 he is the son of John Coon BARNES. and his sister Anna married Abel A PASCO son of Abel PASCO all of these persons are in the 1845 census for White Pigeon and they are living next to each other in the 1850 census. Amos married an Anna or Annis in New York, and he died in White Pigeon 8 December 1868 but cannot find his wife after the 1860 census. The 1850 census lists sons David and Calvin and their sister Orpha SIXBY she married Ephriam SIXBY and had at least three children by him John Frank E. and Susan but cannot find Ephraim any where except in the marriage index. I also know that their daughter Maria married Peter V WYCOFF and had two boys and died in Marshall Calhoun County about 1855 or so as Peter married Esther A WRIGHT in 1857.
