YESH, age 77, of Bronson, Mich., died Monday, July 22, 2002, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He had been in failing health. Dick was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Bronson, a son of John and Anna (CZAJKOWSKI) YESH and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 298th Combat Engineers at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. After the war, he married Patricia FITZGERALD on May 29, 1948, at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson. Dick worked at the former Bronson Reel Company (later known as Bronson Specialties) from his discharge from military service until his retirement in 1989, a total of 44 years. He was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, a charter member of the VFW Post 5003 in Bronson, a member of the Bronson Reel Amateur Baseball Team, had coached Little League Baseball in Bronson for 13 years, was a proficient fly fisherman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He proudly kept his yard, loved his family and taught each of his sons to hunt and fish. Dick was also a well known bowler and had rolled the first 300 games in Bronson. He also bowled several years in the Sturgis Major League from 1952 until his retirement from bowling in 1988. Surviving are; his wife, Patricia; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Kip ADAMSON of Bronson; sons, Mike YESH of Coldwater, Brian and (Donna TAYLOR) YESH, Kevin YESH and Christopher (Carolyn BARONE) YESH, all of Bronson; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass celebrating the life of Richard L. YESH will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Arrangements are being handled by the Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson. Memorial donations may be made to the Oncology Department of the Community Health Center of Branch County. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. FRYE, 80, of 31284 E. Fawn River Road, Sturgis, Mich., died Saturday, Aug.3, 2002, at Fairview Living Centre in Centreville. She was born June 4, 1922, in Fawn River Township, a daughter of Frank and Ora (EBERHARD) WEST. Frances had lived most of her life in Fawn River Township. On Dec. 25, 1940, she married Cleon FRYE at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. Frances was a homemaker and a member of the Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church in Howe, Ind. She enjoyed time spent with her family and watching and feeding the birds. Surviving are; her loving husband of 61 years, Cleon; two daughters and son-in-law, Dixie and Thomas PITTENGER and Debbie and Scott STEVENS, both of Sturgis; one son, Charles Douglas FRYE of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Charles Douglas FRYE Jr., Charlene FRYE, Crystal REYNOLDS, Carol FRYE, Timothy PITTENGER, Tracy PITTENGER, Tiffany WEHNER and Maranda STEVENS: seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and five sisters. In accordance with her wishes, cremation had taken place. A private graveside committal of the ashes will take place at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak. The Rev. Robert Keim, First United Methodist Church in Sturgis will officiate. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Frye’s memory consider the Fairview Living Centre. YODER, 78, of Sturgis, Mich., died Sunday March 17, 2002, at his home. He was born April 4, 1923, in Brighton, Ind., a son of Paul P. and Florence L. (LONGDEN) YODER. Gene was a lifelong resident of the Sturgis area. On Dec. 5, 1943, he married Alice R. NAMEY at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis. They were together for 55 years until her death on Nov. 12, 1999. Gene was an insurance agent employed by AAA of Michigan from 1946-1981 and was the branch manager of the Sturgis office for many years. Gene was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, B.P.O. Elks#1381 and a life member of the Klinger Lake Country Club where he won numerous club championships. Golf was Gene’s greatest love, next to Alice. A veteran of WW II, he served in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of Tech. 5. He received the Victory Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, one Bronze Battle Star and the Purple Heart. Gene is survived by one brother and his wife, Paul P. and Winifred YODER, Harbor Springs; a nephew and niece; and special friends, Michael and Kelly MORBERG, Bella Vista, Ark., and James and Jane BOYDEN, White Pigeon. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis. The Rev. William Murphy will officiate. If desired, memorial donations in Mr. Yoder’s memory may be directed to Pet Haven. Mr. YANCEY was born June 20, 1924, in Sturgis, Mich., to the late John Hamton YANCEY and the late Violet Ruth JANSEN YANCEY. He was preceded in death by a grandson, John Douglas GREENWALT. A 1942 graduate of Sturgis High School, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps in 1943 while attending the University of Michigan where he played in the marching band. He was promoted to First Lieutenant at 19 while at Yale University, before being stationed at Lowery Air Force Base in Denver, Colo., with later duty assignments in Florida and Utah. Later he served in the Air Force Reserves. He returned to Sturgis and worked for the Kirsch Company, where he met and married the former Jean STEVENSON of White Pigeon, Mich., in 1947. They divorced in 1979. After WW II, he studied at Northrop Engineering in California before returning to Michigan where he farmed and co-owned the Red McGowan Appliance Store in White Pigeon. In 1962 he moved to Fort Collins, Colo., where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1988. In 1989 he married Allene Marie WITTIG YANCEY in Kansas City, Mo. In 1996 they moved to McDonough, Ga., where he was a member of the American Legion and attended Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Stockbridge. Survivors include; his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, Lizabeth and Dean GREENWALT of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Sara and John HUFFMAN of Winchester, Va.; step-children, David BENJAMIN of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Debbie LENSE of McDonough; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Charles CHILDS of Plymouth, Mich.; and two nieces and a nephew. Memorial services for Jack Lee YANCEY will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Pastor Kent Fuqea will officiate. Military interment services will follow at 2 p.m. in Eastlawn Memorial Fund in Cheyenne, Wyo., or to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Mr. YANCEY. She was a longtime resident of Raytown, Mo., where she coached championship softball teams, served as a Democratic Party officer in Jackson County, and as the church secretary for Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. When she moved to Hoffman Estates and then Sleepy Hollow, Ill., she was active in both church and community affairs. In February 1984 she retired from United Airlines and moved with her husband to Lake Templene, Mich., upon his retirement in April 1992. She served as Parish Council officer of St. Clare’s in Centreville and secretary of the Lake Templene Home Owners Association. Mary Frances was the beloved wife of William P. KNIGHT (married Oct. 18, 1947) of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; devoted mother of daughters, Barbara Jean KNIGHT of Wheaton, Ill.; and Carol Lynn KNIGHT REDA, husband of Carol; sister of James KREKOVICH of Leewood, Kansas, and John KREKOVICH of Overland Park, Kansas; aunt of many nieces and nephews; and adoptive mother of Sue SEGERLIN DULLEA. She was a master gardener, as well as accomplished craftswoman to all who knew her. Services will be private at her request. In lieu of flowers or other tributes, Mary had asked that donation be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or that a flower be planted in her honor. Her family thanks everyone who offered their prayers and support. END

KOSMERICK, 87, of Bronson, died May 17, 2002, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility where she had been staying for the past four days. She had been stricken at home a week earlier. Catherine was born July 1, 1914 in Batavia Township, a daughter of Thomas and Josephine (MUJTA) LUDWICK and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. She married Adam KOSMERICK on Oct. 15, 1934 at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church. Adam died May 8, 1999. Catherine was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Sacred Heart Society. She also was a member of Local 797 UAW and the AARP. She retired from the Kirsch Company in 1977 after 22 years of service. Prior to that she also had worked at the L.A. Darling Co., formerly in Bronson, and the former Douglas Manufacturing Co., also in Bronson (now Douglas Autotech). A very giving lady, Catherine was a volunteer for several charities over many years. She also enjoyed bowling, bingo, senior dinners, cooking, playing cards and her garden. Surviving are her daughters, Patricia THEILE of Farmington Hills, and Sylvia WEAVER of Bronson; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine WOTTA, Pearl LUDWICK and Regina WIELGOS, all of Bronson, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will celebrate at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Prayers before mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Kolcz Funeral Home. Friends may call at the Kolcz Funeral Home anytime Sunday where the family will be present from noon until 8 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary School. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home. Obituary also at www.kolcz.com where messages may be left for the family. END

He was employed by MedTec Ambulance Corporation and was a skilled carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, politics and just plain working. Surviving are; his wife, Brenda; one daughter, Kathy Marie CASTRO (CARMEN) of Three Rivers; one son, Rudolf Edmond KIRNER Jr. of Sturgis; two grandchildren, Audriana CASTRO and Ezequiel, both of Three Rivers; one sister, Margarete PETRAN, and one brother, Josef KIRNER, both of Vienna, Austria; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and on Jan. 16, 1944,in Sturgis he married Georgia PAPPAS. Lloyd owned Quality Tool and Die for 45 years before selling the business in 1997. He then opened a small engine repair shop and has been employed by Crocker Limited for the past three years. He started showing quarterhorses in 1972 and was associated with Sunnywood Quarterhorse Farm. Lloyd was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He had served in the Navy during World War II for five years, serving on the USS Saratoga which was torpedoed three times, and while the ship was in dry dock, he served on the USS Shipley Bay. He enjoyed showing quarter horses with his daughter, Diana, as well as carpentry, growing mums, fishing and especially his family. The family would like to thank Emily Haller and Elizabeth Lanning for their constant assistance during Lloyd’s illness. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Georgia; one daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Rick CAPMAN of Sturgis; one sister, Dorothy SEABOLD of Sturgis; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Mae HORNING and one brother, Norman H. KREIDER Jr. Friends and relatives may call after 2 p.m. today at the Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. of Sturgis, where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Religious services for Lloyd A. Following his discharge from the Navy his electronics career afford him and his family the opportunity to travel and live in several places throughout the world. Ron returned to Sturgis in 1984 where he and his family operated the Sturgis Taxi Service for several years. On Jan. 2, 1966, he married Karon SPINNEY in Sturgis. Ron was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sturgis, and he was a past trustee for Sturgis Township. Ron enjoyed creating stained glass, researching family history and genealogy, and tinkering with electronics and computers. Surviving are; his wife, Karon; two daughters, Dawn and her husband, Paul ROOYAKKERS, Sturgis, and Larra KING, Kalamazoo; one son, Christophir KING, at home; two grandsons, Isaiah and Christian ROOYAKKERS; one sister, Arletta GRUZINSKI, Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1111 Galyn, Sturgis, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Bishop Phillip Kellogg will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Do any if you know whether there are local newspaper articles about the "local boys" that served in the Civil War? My G-Grand Uncle, Giles S. Williams, was killed in 1862 during the battle of Antietam, and his son, Oscar, was sent home to Burr Oak the following December where he died soon after from disease.
