MO, (Late TX and IL) that there is a connection to the James', but I can't figure where. I think there was a Shepherd that rode with them, but I have not been able to find out anything about his family. What little I have found almost led me to believe he was unmarried. Does any one know of any web sites or serious James researchers that could shed some light on these men? >> Hi Carolyn, My maiden name is Shepherd and according to my father, we were related to Jesse James or to the Shepherds that rode with him. I was too young at the time to remember which, or to care. Now trying to find my ggf, I am at a brick wall. My grandfather was Thomas A. Shepherd b. MO 1877. Checking the Phelps Co. 1910 census, he is listed with his wife and children. The only info about his parents were that they were born in the US......same as his death certificate. I have read several books about Jesse James and Quantrill, finding some detail about the Shepherds that rode with them, but nothing on the families. George Shepherd was the most famous and a Lt. in the Quantrill Raiders. He killed Jim Anderson on the state capitol lawn in Austin, Texas, in retaliation for the death of his nephew, Ike Flannery by "Bloody Bill" Anderson (Jim's brother). George was married to Matty Maddox who was also a part of Quantrill's Raiders....no info re children....don't think there were any. There were other Shepherds: Oliver (Ol), a brother or cousin of George. There has been quite a bit of info on him, including him being shot by some lawmen at his father's or brother's home. (different versions); nothing about marriage, however. The other Shepherds were: Frank, Martin and possibly an Al ( probably Ol). I have seen other Shepherd names, but of no significance. The following is a website with a list of all Quantrill Raiders. It is somewhat difficult to read but some info is given, along with books that are available. http://history.cc.ukans.edu/heritage/research/quantrill.txt Good luck; things seem to have been very hush hush re info about these desperados. Eileen Shepherd Smith PS: Thanks for the Daniel Shepherd reports.....I must check those counties.
