Spinning a top or spinning yarn? Young children are capable, but I still have no idea the significance in the painting. I have some photos from Germany, ca 1920's where the were carrying a large cornucopia of flowers , seemed strange until I learned that that was a German custom on the first day of Kindergarten. Also, their definition of kindergarten may be different that our current understanding. You are right to look at all the clues in the photo. Hope someone else has a better idea and that they share it with the list so we all can learn!
