The Big Muddy is the Missouri. Further, above it, the Mississippi is often clear. I think The rivers are mis-named. One stream begins at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, carries the erosional debris of the Rockies and flows to the Gulf near New Orleans. It has a nice, clear tributary that joins just above St. Louis.
