I'm helping a friend research his family. His grandmother was supposedly a Cherokee Indian. How were Indians identified on the census (Tennessee)? I've seen "W" for White, "B" for Black and "M" for Mulatto but I've never seen any thing else listed. Thanks, Jim . . . James R. If they're counted as Indian, it should be "I". Don't expect to find her so listed, though. If her family was still in TN at that point, whether truly mixed blood or whether the Indian blood is all in someone's imagination, they'd likely have been doing their damnedest to pass as white. No benefit at that time to being identified as Indian, and a lot of downside.
