Dear Anna, The very first thing a serious researcher needs is a good map of the area they are working in. These can be gotten free from Chambers of Commerce's and there are many web sites also. http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html By looking at a map you will see that St. Louis is in MO and East St. Louis is in IL, divided by the Mississippi River. Even people who were raised in the general are don't seem to realize the difference! The histories of the 2 areas is also quite different, with St. Louis being much older. Also St. Louis became an independent city in the 1870's ('76 I think) and before that it was considered St. Louis Co. So remember to note your dates as well as locations, that will help you know whether to look in the County or City files. East St. Louis is in St. Clair Co., IL. Hope that helps! Good luck on your quest. Carolyn, originally from East.
