Thanks to all who answere my query re Willow Springs Mo. It helped. my 3rd great grandfather William Strong moved there sometime after the 1880 Federal Census where he is listed in Adams Township, Gage Co. NE. and he is buried in Johnson Co. NE. Death: 11 Aug 1897. His second wife, visited family in Cheyenne Ks, and mentions she is from Willow Springs, Mo. William was born 11 Nov 1826 in Conn, moved to Ohio, then NE. I don't know when he move to Willow Springs. Does anyone have access to City Directories who would do a look up for me? Maybe there is a notice in the newspapers of his death 11 Aug 1897. I will be happy to cover copying and postage. Marita
I know of two where my family worked. They are: Phenix, Greene, MO and Carthage/Kendricktown, Jasper, MO. My grandfather, his brother, their brother-in-law and a number of their children followed occupations in quarry operations. I am researching the following Jones brothers and sister. Thomas Jones b. 1808 Pulaski Co. KY, son of Alexander Jones and Susannah Woozley. He married Catharine America Pittman 1830 Sangamon Co. Illinois. He migrated to Missouri by approximately 1839-1840. He died in Missouri in 185? James Jones had been married three times. Sarah Stice 10/21/ 1832, Missouri Ann Stiles, 11/05/1839, both in Sangamon County Illinois, and Mary Cox? 184? He had also migrated to Missouri by 1839-1840. James Jones died in Dallas County Missouri 1855, and is buried in the Macedonia Cemetery. Burrell/Beryl T. Jones and wife Charlotta Williams. Beryl returned to Illinois after 1860 reportedly to DeWitt County Illinois, and died in 1864. His son Rueben is found on the 1880 Census for Oregon as a Gold Miner and his mother is living in the household with he, his wife and family. Susan D. Jones the above three brothers’ sister is said to have married a Caswell Williams in Missouri abt. 1847-48 and died there. I find a Caswell Williams on the 1860 Mendcino Co. California Census and that a Caswell Williams sold property in the 1880’s in Green County California and the land records state that he was living in California at the time. I have found the brothers on the 1850 Dallas Co. Missouri Census. Although Thomas Jones states his place of birth as Tennessee, which he may have believed to be true. His family shortly after his birth went from Pulaski Co. KY to Bedford Co. Tennessee where they lived a few years then back to Hart County Ky. Migrating to Wayne Co. Ill. and finally by mid 1820’s Sangamon Co. Illinois. 13 33 33 Jones Thomas 42 M . Merchant 1,800 Tennessee . . . . . 14 33 33 Jones Catharine A. 34 F . . . Indiana . . Hello List, Can anyone tell me some locations of rock quarries in MO that were active during the 1920's and 30's? Help appreciated, Elyce
The time period you are referencing may be during the same period that the Grandin Lumber Company built a company town two saw mills, a railroad, and a lake in the area east of Willow Springs close to another Missouri town, Eminence. The company cut all of the pine trees for several counties around for lumber to be sent East. Later it started cutting a couple of varieties of oak trees for railroad ties. A wild shot at explaining why the relatives may have stopped in Willow Springs.
Anna M. Miller (birth probably between 1870 - 1880) birth place unknown but is probably MO, IL, or IA. Maiden name ARTHUR. I would appreciate very much if someone with access to the 1910 or 1920 census would do a look up for me. Unfortunately I don't have much information, but I do know she was still living in Kansas City in February 1939. She is my great aunt. She signed the death certificate of her father, my g grandfather, in Boone County, AR 02/1939. It was signed Anna M. Miller, Kansas City, MO. She was the last surviving sibling of this family. All the others died before 1920. I wasn't born until 10/1938 so did not know any of the family. Would like to know if she had any children, but first must find where she was living. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Jan, in Indiana

If you go to google.com and put "Willow Springs, MO" with the quotations marks, it has several listings. Hope this helps. Jann
Sillow springs is located southeast of Springfield, MO. It is at the junction of Hwy's 60/63, 137 and 76. The only reason I know that is because I had some Loving/Lovan brothers that became separated in their journey across MO. Two ended up in Willow Springs and the others in Buffalo,Mo. Have a good day! DeLorme's Atlas & Gazetteer shows no Willow Springs. The closest I could find was Wilton Springs, SE of Marshall, in Saline County. Could this be the town? I have been researching some Jones lines into Missouri. I found two of my missing Jones boys, Thomas and James B. Jones in Dallas Co. Missouri on the 1850 Census. Here is my question. On the census James Jones occupation is listed as High Sheriff. Can anyone tell me what that is? In regard to the office is that just what they called the Sheriff of the County at the time or was he Sheriff over a larger area than just Dallas County? Thanks Nancy M.
