1. Re: [MO] East St. Louis vs St. Louis
2. Medlin
3. Dear Anna, The very first thing a serious researcher needs is a good map of the area they are working in. These can be gotten free from Chambers of Commerce's and there are many web sites also. http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html By looking at a map you will see that St. Louis is in MO and East St. Louis is in IL, divided by the Mississippi River. Even people who were raised in the general are don't seem to realize the difference! The histories of the 2 areas is also quite different, with St. Louis being much older. Also St. Louis became an independent city in the 1870's ('76 I think) and before that it was considered St. Louis Co. So remember to note your dates as well as locations, that will help you know whether to look in the County or City files. East St. Louis is in St. Clair Co., IL. Hope that helps! Good luck on your quest. Carolyn, originally from East. 1. Re: Fw: [MO] Bounty Land Warrants
2. You can receive the Bounty Land Warrants from the National Archives by sending in you request on Form 84. To receive this Form send an email request to: [email protected] In the body of the message put Form 84 and the number you need with your mailing address. On the Form you need to fill out the information on the document and patent number for the Land Warrant. You can get those from the BLM web site. If you don't have that their URL is: BLM - ES, GLO Records - Home If you'll include your credit card number on the Form request it'll really speed the process up. It will still take several weeks to months to get the packet back but it's usually well worth the wait. Debi

1. [MO] Diaries: subject computer sort
2. Help! I have abt 15 5-yr diaries and several travel journals of an ancestor, plus a new computer. After I type all entries and dates exactly in the computer, is there a way one can get the computer to sort by subject word? For example: if I want to find all entries (and the date of each entry) mentioning a paternal g-grandfather and g-g-grandfather how do I tell the machine to find all entries concerning John Whitfield JOHNSTON and Robert Flurnoy JOHNSTON? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 3. Dabney A. WHITLOW (b.c. 1828 in KY) and his wife Olive (b.c. 1835 in TN) were enumerated in Tarrant Co., TX in 1880. According to this census record, several of their children were born in MO. A patron submission to the IGI lists the following children: 1. William F. WHITLOW - Birth: 1857 La Plata, Macon, Missouri 2. Nellie E. WHITLOW - Birth: 1860 La Plata, Macon, Missouri 3. Florence WHITLOW - Birth: 1862 La Plata, Macon, Missouri 4. Marian C. WHITLOW - Birth: 1866 La Plata, Macon, Missouri 5. Charles WHITLOW - Birth: 1868 La Plata, Macon, Missouri There is apparently no record of Dabney WHITLOW's marriage in Macon Co. If anyone has records for other counties, I'd appreciate a check. The index at Ancestry.com for the 1860 MO census does not show him either, and I'm stumped. Thanks for any help. Ann -- Ann Avery Hunter Richmond, Virginia mailto:[email protected]
