Hi, y'all, It often happens that when folks send e-mail messages, the html equivalent of the message is appended to the message. The html part is actually longer than the message itself. This waste, and it is waste when unintended, causes problems. 1) It adds to the required bandwidth on the net. 2) It adds to the required space on one's hard drive for the recipient to save the message. 3) It thus encourages the recipient to delete the message. To learn how to avoid these problems, see <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/html-off.html> Fortuntely, the rootsweb servers do not forward the html, at least not in the digest mode. Dear Patti, Think I've figured out a way to get this to you w/o having to retype to the List. See below. Hope it is what you needed. Anna T-town Anna's computer sort file: From: "Patt Roach" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 I use Familytreemaker. If I want to print out a certain line, and that line only, it can be done in the printing process. I do it all the time. If you have Familytreemaker, let me know, and I will explain the printing process. With all those diaries, you have it made. Good luck! ===================================================== From: "Ellen Elliott" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 Anna, Do you have Microsoft Office or Lotus loaded on your computer? Pressing down the control key (lower left on keyboard) and the letter "f" brings up a little box in which you type a key word. The cursor will go to that word each time it is mentioned. (I often do this when skimming data bases on the web. Be aware, it is not always 100% perfect.) This function works in both Word and Excel spreadsheets. I like to use the spreadsheets because you can enter information into columns and then sort by that column. Takes a bit of practice. Remember, always save your document before you start experimenting. That way if you goof up, you can escape and come back in with no damage down. Write back if you get stuck. I don't know all the bells and whistles but I use the programs extensively in my work, and can navigate them fairly well. I keep my family tree on an excel spreadsheet before entering into FamilyTree Maker. It doubles the work, but I can save the information to any number of new documents. For instance, I sorted all of the names alphabetically and again chronologically to help me when researching. =========================================================== From: Linda Sharp <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 Anna, What program did you use? How you ask it to find information will be determined by the program type you used. For instance a spreadsheet program will sort, a word processing program will not, but will "find". Linda ======================================================== From: Janet K Daily <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 What word processing program are you using??? There should be a manual explaining exactly how to use the program and that would tell you how to set up a document so that you could find specific terms/words/names. Good luck! I'm sure that many, many genealogists (including me) will be green with envy over your treasure trove! Janet Keeling Daily ============================================================= From: "Wanda Ellis" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 Subject: Re: [MO] Diaries: subject computer sort If you typed them in a database, in columns, you could then tell you computer to sort by dates or names. Wanda Ellis ============================================================ From: [email protected] (Robert M. Doerr) Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 Hi You could index the data. Modern word processors make that easy. I realize that that is not just what you want. Another possibility is to hit Enter just before each such item. It would be necessary to use the new line command instead of Enter in all other instances. If you try that, be sure to do it on a copy of your main file. Then you could sort it all. Bob Doerr in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks ================================================================ From: "Crystal Jokela" <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 My husband is a computer analyst and says that how you can sort depends on the program you have entered the information in. Please let us know and we will try to help. Crystal Jokela ================================================================ From: Vance W McLane <[email protected]> Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2001 Hi. It would help to know what computer program you are using to enter the info into. Are you using a word processor, a general database (i.e. Access, Works .wdb), a specialized genealogy database (Family Tree Maker, etc, or perhaps a spreadsheet (Excel, Works .wks)? Any time you have any text on the main message block of your screen you can click on the "Edit" tool found at the top of your screen. Choose "Find" from the menu that appears. Enter the text you are searching for in the space provided and click search or find now. The highlighted cursor will appear above the first example of that text in your document. Each click on the "Next" button will move you to the next occurence of that text. Hopes this helps a little. Feel free to contact for add'l info. Vance p.s. T-town = TinselTown??? Maureen -- I believe the MO state school for the deaf is in Fulton, MO. Have you tried looking there? I don't know what county Fulton is in. Also there are two private schools for the deaf in St. Louis, MO. One is Central Institute for the Deaf (my alma mater). The other is St. Joseph School for the Deaf. In the old days, the family will often send the deaf child to board at the school, even if out of the county, and have the child visit home during vacation breaks. I hope this helps. Received a number of responses concerning bounty land warrants. Two I found particularly worthwhile (see following.) Hope this helps. Anna T-town -----------begin responses----------------- [Excerpts from original emails; emphasisÂ’ & comments added 26-January-2001] 1)From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 10:59:12 EST Subject: Re: Fw: [MO] Bounty Land Warrants A bounty Land Warrant is land a person gets for serving in the military for a certain time. For the Civil War it was 3 years. I think for the Civil War the men would get Homestead acts. Which is about the same thing as Bounty Land Warrants. For the Homestead act the men would have to stay on the property and improve it to be able to keep the land. Bounty Land warrants are files you get from the Service files from the National Archives. Land grants are files you can get from the BLM-GLO. You can get the BLM-GLO web site from Cyndislist.com under land. I don't know where your ancestor's land was from so I don't know if it will be in the BLM-GLO site. I have recently sent for land applications to the National Archives to get info on the Land warrants my ancestors bought. There wasn't any extra info from that file that wasn't already on the BLM-GLO site. A friend of mine ordered the application for a Homestead land grant and got extra info on her ancestor. Now if you're going to order the records for military services you may get something worth while. When I ordered from those there were 3 different categories. Bounty Land warrant, pension files and service records. You need to order each one separately. Bounty and pension files are good one to order. You probably won't get much info from service records. Last October the forms changed and the prices went up. So it may be a little different. I think the prices are $17.00 now. You may be able to get info on how to get order forms from the National Archives web site. If you have more questions just ask. Kathy Pugh ----------------------------------------------------------- 2)From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 11:20:38 EST You can receive the Bounty Land Warrants from the National Archives by sending in your request on Form 84. To receive this Form send an email request to: [email protected] In the body of the message, put Form 84 and the number you need with your mailing address. On the Form you need to fill out the information on the document and patent number for the Land Warrant. [last sentence is verbatim. Do not understand it.] You can get those from the BLM web site: "http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/" If you'll include your credit card number on the Form request it'll really speed the process up. It will still take several weeks to months to get the packet back but it's usually well worth the wait. Debi ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- From: Rochelle <[email protected]> Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 I am waiting on mine to come for my great great grandfather. I wanted his Mexican War records and that is what you request. Maybe I will understand why they are called Bounty Land Warrants when I receive the info. Another year and another plea. I am still looking for my grandparents. They may have been in the Springfield area at one time. Both were deaf mutes, so any schools in that area would be appreciated. Joseph Jenkins, d. late 1940's, married, 4 children, 1 daughter and 3 sons. Later moved to Kansas City, MO area. Any info would be appreciated as my puter crashed with several posts stored. Included was one with a couple of schools for the deaf listed. Thanks, Maureen
Dear Ms. Lininger, My apologizes to both you and the List. Am new to computer mailing lists & genealogy via computer. I have been overwhelmed with the generosity of the Missouri List members in responding to my queries. Haven't had time to respond to most of them, am still dealing with flu. Somehow I thought all of the responses I was getting on this subject WERE sent to the list. Have made a file concerning above, with the most pertinent info as it concerns me specifically. Would be happy to put it on the list, but it would be an attachment since I deleted the email each time the email entry was put in the "computer sort" file. Next week sometime will print out the file, then type it to email. Currently have 2 undeleted emails. Will send them back thru the List by "reply". Please let me know personally and I'll download my file to you immediately, along with further updates as I receive them. Hope this helps. It is the least I can do after the good responses I've received abt subject computer sort. Hello, I have recently assumed the hosting of Linn County from Larry Flesher and would like all to come view the new UsGenWeb Linn County Missouri page. It's at: http://mogeneal.tripod.com/linn/linn.html With Larry's kind permission, I have included the pages that were on the previous pages. Additionally, many more has been added including: county history, 1840 & 1850 census index, 1883 pensioners, birth register, and history of Locust Creek bridge, and many other misc. items. To be added: 1860 & 1870 census index, additional cemeteries, 1876 Patron atlas, and will records. I will send out announcements when there are new additions, but please check back often. Comments and questions are most welcome. Also, if you have any Linn County data that you would like to share, I would be happy to post it (with proper credit to you) and share with others. Hello from Snowy Salina, KS I have updated the Shannon Co. Site and added a Lookup page of Volunteers. Now to be truthful I found a file, which I had overlooked and I added a new Volunteer to the list of lookups, Cathy Patterson who has roots deep in Shannon Co. Come take a look I have also started a PhotoShop. I thought I would start it off with a photo of my dad who was from the Welch Cave area. He dearly loved the Current River and the hills. If you have a website with photos pertaining to Shannon county and are of your family or the County Histroy please send along your url. I am sorry I am not able to accept your photos, my computer won't hold all of them. But I am able to link and will be happy to do so. Ona Fern has started on the "P" Obits and that project is coming along nicely. Last week prior to my foot operation, which has me hobbled, I started copying my Shannon Co. Census microfilms. Hopefully I will be able to start this project soon. As of now, I am working diligently on the Kansas Civil War Regimental History' s and Muster Lists. At least I have plenty to do while sitting and sitting. Enjoy, Kathy "I was cut out to be rich.....but I was sewn up wrong!"
