    3. My 2nd great grandfather, JEREMIAH C. VANNOY left Pike Co., MO, and came to Oregon with his six girls. I'm looking for information on a possible wagon train at this time. He ended up in Josephine Co in southern Oregon, so they may have followed the Applegate Trail. Anyone out there have ancestors who may have come out west in 1864? Linda in Oregon

    3. An awful lot of Missouri Confederates also came to Texas around 1860-1875 to get away from living on a battlefield. If it wasn't a skirmish on your own land, it was bushwhackers and jayhawkers and Order No. 11..... Missouri Union types, on the other hand, who wanted to get away from this tended to go to Kansas, Iowa or Illinois, whichever was closer or wherever they already had ties. Some of them later came back. A not untypical pattern, from one of my ancestors: Went from Greene Co to Texas (and in fact evacuated some of the women and children from his extended family to Texas as well for the actual duration of the war, where the men and older boys stayed and worked the land or went off and fought). About 1880, he tiptoed back into the region, but stayed on the Arkansas side until 1900, when he was back in Missouri, but down on the border in Taney County. I found land records for Garrett (Garrard), George W., Liberty J. and F. M. Teeter in north Texas after this period. All of these Teeters returned to Missouri but there were many more who stayed in Texas. My ggrandfather, John Robert Teeter, was the son of an F. M. Teeter and according to his obit he was born in Galveston, Texas. Why F. M. and wife (Louisa M. Schooling) were in Galveston I have no idea. Since an F. M. Teeter was in Texas in the late 1840's and early 1850's I am thinking this was the father of my ggrandfather and the same F. M. who was recorded on the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Chariton Co. MO. I am sure there were many more who came to Texas for land besides the Teeters. It would be well to check the census records of Texas from 1850 and later. ==== Missouri Mailing List ==== To subscribe to MO-ROLLCALL-L: send a message containing only the word "subscribe" to [email protected] ============================== Search over 900 million names at Ancestry.com! http://www.ancestry.com/rd/rwlist1.asp

    3. It probably depends on the time period. I have quite a few family members who left the Midwest for California -- probably for the weather (and one or two who went to Arizona, probably for the same reason). Then I have folks who went to Kansas or to Colorado. Not being from the Midwest, I don't have an idea for these moves. But, these were all many years before there were auto plants, so looking in Michigan for my other "missings" isn't something I'd thought about. You need to know how your people made a living, or what they were likely to do to make a living. Were they farmers or town-folk? Singles or did they have a family? What was going on in Missouri and the rest of the country? The 1900 and 1920 census have been soundexed for all of the states. The 1910 has been soundexed for 22 states. At a large library, it is fairly easy to look at several states for this time period rather quickly. If you need to find someone after 1920, the 1930 census will be out next year, although I understand only a few states have been soundexed. Your best bet for locating people after 1920 is to talk to your older living relatives. Elizabeth Richardson, Ketchikan, Alaska [email protected]

    2. Norma, Offhand, the only thing I can think of for Ann Arbor MI drawing a lot of people would be the University of Michigan, which was established a very long time ago. I don't know the exact year, but I think it was either the late 1800s or very early 1900s. It has always had a very good Liberal Arts curriculum and is probably best known for it's U of M Hospital, medical staff, medical courses, and medical teaching staff. It now has a well-recommended Burn Center, as part of it's hospital and also as part of the medical courses. The Burn Center has not been in existence as long as the rest of the hospital, however. jippi

    2. For those of you who might want to follow up on the suggestion to do research in Michigan for transplanted Missourians, here are some long-time major locations for Michigan automotive plants/factories. The following areas have auto plants that are still in operation, dating from the early-to-mid 1900s, although they may not all be in their exact original locations. Detroit in Wayne County Hamtramck in Wayne County (Hamtramck is the correct spelling!) Flint in Genessee County Bay City in Bay County Saginaw in Saginaw County Pontiac in Oakland County Lansing in Ingham County Also, the main Ford plant used to be in Highland Park in Wayne County. Highland Park and Hamtramck are independent cities, although they are both located within (surrounded by) the city of Detroit. Highland Park is where Henry Ford implemented and perfected his assembly line method in the early 1900s, and raised wages to $5.00 per day. The Highland Park factory no longer exists, although some remaining parts of the old buildings are being used for other purposes. jippi in Michigan

    2. You have that right Norma. Thats what some of my Missouri Uncles did. They ended up in Mt. Morris Mich which was just to the N.E. of Flint. Dont think they ever really lived in Flint. Always right on the out skirts of Flint. For those of you who want to ck it out. Detroit is Wayne County Mich and Flint is Genesee County. I dont remember which one Pontiac was in. But its between Flint and Detroit. You might also want to check Saginaw and the Bay City area which are north of Flint. Stan Brookshier, Sr.

    3. Hi List, I am doing some family research for my uncle JOHN WALTER CLOVER (b. May 27, 1923 in St. Louis, MO. He married BESSIE LUCILLE FREY on March 23, 1954 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Bessie's family was also from Missouri). John was the son of JOHN ELI CLOVER (b. July 19, 1887 d. July 28, 1929. I think both locations are Washington CO. MO.) and EMMA MUELLER. John Eli and Emma also had children named Leonard, Grace, and Mildred. John Eli Clover had brothers and sisters named HERMAN, DEWEY, CHARLIE, TOM, HARRY, JENIFER, and TRACY. My Uncle John Walter Clover also has these cousins: MILTON CLOVER and VICTOR CLOVER. Another surname in the family might be SAMUELS. Please email me privately if any information is out there. Thanks, Nancy Helvey
