In a message dated 4/5/2001 11:25:53 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Maybe it's time for folks to dig out their toughest Missouri brick wall and > tell us about it. > Ok Megan, Remember.. You asked for it... :).... :) BOY.. do I ever have a brick wall. His name is Richard Johnston (Johnston). AND.. I started working on genealogy in 1968. I know no more about this person than I did in 1968/1969. He has managed to remain a mystery for 30 years. Here is what I know... Richard Johnston (Johnson) b. abt 1794 in Georgia (based on 1850 census of Wayne Co., Missouri). Occupation - Physician (based on 1850 census) In the 1850 census of Wayne Co., Missouri he is listed with 2 children - no wife. The children are: Leo Dicia Johnston - b. abt 1838 in Arkansas William Johnston - b. abt 1842 in Missouri Leo Dicia Johnston is my great-grandmother. By the 1860 census of Reynolds Co., Missouri, Leo Dicia has married and is living with her husband James Newton Carnahan. Living with Richard Johnston in the 1860 census of Reynolds Co. is the son William Johnston and his new wife Sarah. They also have a son, Joseph, age 2 months. The Wayne Co., Missouri History by Rose Fulton Cramer lists a Richard Johnston as an early doctor on the Western side of Wayne Co. but includes no additional information. And... then I have not been able to find any additional information about this family. Richard and William have remained a mystery. Any help would be very GREATLY appreciated. Thanks and take care - Emma

There is also a printed list of counties showing where/when each was made. I have used this book so much checking to see if any of my relatives were close to the counties mentioned in the letters. I also made a copy of the states that my ancestors migrated from showing how they moved in case I could find some pattern of movement that I could identify a large group doing. Mary Lou Moore-KS
Dear List: Does any one know of the significance of 1900's portrait photographers posing their subjects with various objects and the significance of these objects? The reason I ask is that I have a portrait photograph of my father (about age 3), all dressed up in fancy clothes and hat, holding a hammer! I believe the family was living in northeast Georgia (White County) at the time. I have a oil painting of another ancestor as a child, painted about 1860, showing him holding what appears to be a spinning top. I assumed the child was given something to hold to keep him still during the sitting. Dunno about other states, but here's what we have at MOGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mogenweb/momaps.htm Which links to various maps of the following descriptions: District of Louisiana, 1804 Missouri Territory in 1812 Missouri Territory in 1813 Missouri Territory in 1816 Missouri in 1821 Missouri in 1834 Missouri in 1841 Missouri in 1845 Missouri in 1860 County Identification Map, Modern It's intended that for any given time in history, you'll be able to see what counties there were and where they were. Dear List, I know it was possble to legally change ones name through the courts in NY but was it possible to do so in Missouri? If it was possible where would one find this information? I know some will say that all one had to do was move ten miles and say thier name was something other than what it was but I also know that some went the "legal" route to do so also. If you can't read the message because the print's too small, change the font size of received mail. That's not difficult. Use your help button to tell you how. Go to "FONTS". George
On 18 March I published the names of individuals whose photographs appeared in the Alhambra Grotto publications in 1929 & 1930. I am sure there are a few individuals who thought this was a waste of time on their part in having to read these notes and there are others that scanned the lists hoping that I might have their relative listed. I thought I would give a short report of the results, thus far: Out of the 87 identified photos I have received 18 requests, one of the photos was sent to two persons, while two photos of bowling teams was sent to two other persons, this evening I met one of these individuals and was able to give him a bowling trophy from 1940 which was presented to his father's bowling team. Until this evening I hadn't looked at the entire engraving on the trophy but prior to the man's arrival I noticed that it was presented to the winning team sponsored by the PEETZ UNDERTAKERS, the business owned by his cousins. Emma I've been following the Johnston folks too... but in Cooper Co -- from Bourbon Co. KY. There's also a Johnston connection to William H. Johnston -- who was married to Margaret Hutchinson....I believe William had a brother and sister -- who came out to Missouri as well... to Boone Co... My brick wall is Lillie Mae Cassidy. I apologise for the long message, but she is extremely confusing.Different census records show conflicting info, but, I believe I found her in the 1880 MO census. She was 7 years, born in MO. Her father was listed as A. Cassidy, dressmaker, born in Ark. Her mother was not listed herself, but Lillie's mother was born in KY. Her mother may have died between 1873 and 1880. The census taker had marked a "F" for the sex of the parent, and then changed it to a "M". This is clear on the soundex card, but when I looked at the actual census, it looked like the other way around. Places of the parents birth do make it look like the parent was a male. But I never found a male dressmaker in the St. Louis city directories from 1870 to 1890. There were two women, Annie and Mary Cassidy, during different years, who were dressmakers. Living with them as a boarder in 1880, was C.H. Horner, a painter. He shows up many times in the city directories, but never at their address, 822 N Ninth St., St. Louis, and never with them. Lillie married William Havis sometime before 1890, and moved to Pitts., then Chicago. I have a death cert for a William Havis, who died in 1914. He was the same age of her son William. His mother was listed as Lilly Havis, maiden name Horner, born in St. Louis. But the father was a David Havis. This child was buried in the plot my Lillie owned, and he is the only William Havis in this cemetery. I am trying to find a marriage record either for Lillie Cassidy& William Havis around 1888/89 or her parents, perhaps around 1871/72. I am also looking for the possible death of her mother after 1873 and before 1880. St. Louis has no record of Lillie's birth. The only other thing I know about her is that they lived in an area called Carrie Patch. I would appreciate any suggestions. Diane
I have yet to break through this brick wall... but I keep on hoping. My great grandfather, John H. Evans married Emma Jane Parsley on 1 December 1884 (possibly in Tina) Carroll County, MO. On their marriage license it states that John came from Jackson County, OH. That was all for John. John and Emma had one child, my grandfather, Willy Ernest Evans, born August 1886, Tina, Carroll Co. MO. Two months after Willy was born, Emma died. Some time after that John remarried to Minerva ?, a widow, who had three young daughters. At this time John was in Livingston Co. MO. John and Minerva had a son Alfred Ray, June 1892. Alfred died December 1920. Minerva died in 1944. Minerva raised her daughters and Alfred alone. Where did John go? Where did he end up? We believe he was a carpenter. Minerva's daughter's names at the time of their mothers death in 1944 were: Mrs. Leta May James of Kansas City, MO Mrs. Verna Bell Clark, of Bloom, Kansas Mrs. Gladys C. VanStone of Butte, Montana Amy help would be appreciated. Thank you. Ramona Kelley
Nancy Dalton married William Louis Jones around the year 1900. Can anyone tell me how far back marriage records go for the state, and what would be the best way to research this? They both died many happy years later in California. Will was born in Illinois, and family lore has Nancy born in Missouri. Any thoughts?? Thanks, Laura
My ggreat grandmother was Mary E HURST who was born in Dade Co Missouri in 1862 according to census records. I have not been able to tie her to any of the HURST families in Dade Co. Mary E HURST married John Erwin HAMPTON in Greenfield MO in 1880. If anyone has any information on who Mary's parents were or who her siblings were I would be very grateful. Thanks Jaime [email protected]
I have been searching for further information on Adam REINSCHMIDT and Theresia SCHMIDT REINSCHMIDT for many years. The family immigrated from Baden to New Orleans in April, 1855. From there they arrived in the St. Louis area. Most of the children of this couple have been accounted for in the St. Louis area, but I have been unable to locate the whereabouts of Adam and Theresia after their arrival in St. Louis. They appear on no census, but certain individual adult aged children do. Of special interest would be their burial site. Any information or connection to this couple would be appreciated.
