Biographical Sketch of Col. William Lavender Lyles, Texas County, MO >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps & Dent Counties, Missouri, from Earliest Times to the Present" Published by Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** Col. William Lavender Lyles, late editor and proprietor of the Mountain Howitzer, of Salem, and now of the Houston Herald, was born in Newberry District, S. C., in 1829, being the son of Robert and Jane (Lavender) Lyles, both natives of Newberry District, S. C., born in 1776 and 1786, and died in 1847 and 1857, respectively. Robert Lyles was the son of Ephraim Lyles, who was a Revolutionary soldier. Robert Lyles was twice married, and Col. William L. Lyles was the eldest child by the second marriage. He remained at home as long as his father lived, and in 1849 he and his mother and sister moved to Pickens County, Ala., and the following year to Chickasaw County, Miss. Here he purchased land, and followed farming until the breaking out of the late war. In the fall of 1861 he raised Company B, Twenty-fourth Mississippi Regiment, was elected captain of the same, and served until the close of hostilities. He was at Shiloh, Perryville, Corinth, Resaca, Murfreesboro, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, and at Jonesboro, where he was shot in the neck, which disabled him for years, not being able to eat food for seven days. He was at the hospital at Griffin, GA., but was not paroled until the surrender. At Dalton, GA., he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. After the war he engaged in merchandising at West Point, and in 1867 he went to Oxford, Miss., where he remained until 1873, and then moved to Salem. He here followed merchandising a short time, and in 1878 was elected to the position of circuit clerk and ex-officio recorder of Dent County, serving four years. The subse- quent four years he was in the real estate business, and in 1886 he established the Mountain Howitzer, editing its columns until recently. On the 24th of January, 1889, Col. Lyles sold this paper to Mr. John C. Pugh, and purchased the Houston Herald of Mr. Beauregard Ross, of Houston, MO., and took charge of the same February 10, 1889. His motto is: "My gun is the Press; my ammunition, Truth, Justice, Morality and Democracy, deliberately aimed." His journal is a newsy, bright sheet, and has a good circulation. Col. Lyles is a true Christian gentleman, and an esteemed citizen. During the years 1870 and 1872 he was a mem- ber of the State Legislature of Mississippi. In 1853, previous to the war, he married Miss Elizabeth P. Kilgore, who was born in Greenville District, S. C., in 1834. They have three children: Pleasant L., Edgar K. and Cecil E. Col. Lyles is a member of the Masonic fratern- ity, is a Democrat in his political views, casting his first president- ial vote for Pierce in 1852, and he and wife are members of the Baptist Church, of which he is a deacon. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/mo+index+9013105452809+F Peggy Wilson, Researching Surnames: AR/MO/OK - Basinger/Baysinger/Bennett/Annis Liles-Lyles/ Harrell-Herrell/Mizell/Sanders/Wilson

I knew the folks on this list would come through with the German naming traditions. Thanks. Bev Gardner Proud Mom of a United States Marine
NAMING PATTERNS The lst son was usually named after the father's father. The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father. The 3rd son was usually named after the father. The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother. The 5th son was usually named after the mother's eldest brother. The lst daughter was usually named after the mother's mother. The 2nd daughter was usually named after the father's mother. The 3rd daughter was usually named after the mother. The 4th daughter was usually named after the mother's eldest sister. The 5th daughter was usually named after the father's eldest sister. (From Antique Week Publication) This pattern was not always followed exactly, but most would usually keep the pattern for the lst 3 children. If there was a name that was found in every generation, then somewhere in their children, you will surely find these names. If one is stuck on finding parents for an ancestor, try this pattern to give a suggestion as to a name to search for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To add a note of my own: My husband was born to a German Catholic family and he was the l5th of l7 children--He was named after his father, as they thought he was going to be the last child. His mother used family ancestors names as middle names for all of the children. Bev, Here is a page from my site that pertains to all types of name patterns. Maybe something here can be of use. http://members.aol.com/Tuffsearch/nametraditions.html I'm sorry if you find any broken links. Unfortunately I'm no longer able to maintain the site, however, I'm sure there are many that will still be useful to you. Good luck. Patty http://members.aol.com/Tuffsearch/Genealogylinks.html

Does anyone on the list have information on the naming patterns for German families? I've seen this somewhere and can't find it now. It had something to do with the first born male being named with the father's fathers name and mother's fathers name or something to that effect. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Bev Gardner Proud Mom of a United States Marine
Norma, I would appreciate a marriage lookup date and area if possible for; Ephraim DAVIS and Martha Susan "Patty" TURNER. I estimate the date to be around 1855 or a few years before. Martha would have been at age 18 and Ephraim at around age 28. I assume it would have taken place around Ozark county Missouri, or thereabouts. They lived their later lives in Douglas county, Missouri. Ephraim's first name may have been abreviated in somesort like I have seen it spelt at different times. Thank you, Janie Luster

I temporarily have the FTM Missouri Marriage Index CD for the years 1851-1900. I will do look-ups for anyone on the list for the next 5 days. Please be as specific as you can as to the full names, year and if you have it, county of the marriage for those common names. Remember, this is just an index. It will only tell you you can find the full record. Norma
He was born March 16, 1876 Missouri. Mothers surname was HALL. He died Alameda, California 1957. Anyone have any knowledge of him? I do not know the County he was born in but if anyone has knowledge of counties with Innes families it would be greatly appreciated, as would any suggestions on how to find his mother and fathers full name. I am not familiar with Missouri records. Adrian Verry Turakina New Zealand
This family was in Iowa, near the Missouri border in 1856. In 1860, they were in St. Joseph. I can’t find them in 1870. In 1875 and 1880, the husband and his third wife, Elmira, were in Crawford Co., Kansas, without any of these children. They did have two others with them, born in MO. All of these children listed below probably were married or died somewhere in MO, most likely all in one county in the area between Nodaway Co. and Vernon Co. Does anyone recognize them? I need to find that county! Children of Jesse Bridges: i. JOHN M. BRIDGES, b. Abt. 1837, Ohio. ii. MARTHA A. BRIDGES, b. Abt. 1839, Indiana. iii. OLIVER BRIDGES, b. Abt. 1843, Indiana. (called Obediah on one census) iv. JAMES P. BRIDGES, b. Abt. 1851, Indiana. v. MARY F. BRIDGES, b. Abt. 1855, Iowa. vi. SARAH A. BRIDGES, b. Abt. 1856, Iowa. Thanks, Jim . . . James R.
