The same thing happened in my family. However, in my case the first father died and the mother remarried. She was made guardian of the children from the second marriage only and made reports to the court, put up a bond, etc. I think it was to make sure none of the children from the first marriage got any of the second husband's money. However, that backfired, as the second husband never fared as well as the first. Also, the grandmother got into the act and stated in her will that unless all of these monies for guardianship were paid back to her by these children from the second marriage, they inherited nothing from her. This occurred in Monroe County, Mississippi. Personally, I can't imagine having to be made guardian of my own children, but those were different times (circa 1887, in my case).
