I just received from <mikis1314@earthlink.net>what appeared to be a reply to my inquiry. It returned my message with a note to check this attachment (as if they had a text document in it) I don't know if they sent it or if the virus sent it's self but norton says it is W32 BadTrans 13313@mm virus. Don't open any reply attachments!!!!! Christmas begins it and Easter completes it
Good advice, Jim. Thanks for letting us know. Since mikis1314 has been infected, he/she likely don't know it yet, until they read this message from Jim. So, to be on the safe side, if you correspond with this person, don't write a personal email until the virus is cleaned up. As I understand this BadTrans virus, it will send itself by replying to any mail that isn't read, to any address it finds on those emails. I'm just glad mikis isn't on the -D list, where there would be many email addresses to send to. The virus will not come over the list, since Rootsweb won't pass attachments on. Just be careful of what attachments you open, making sure you know the sender, and that they warned you it was coming. I have now removed mikis1314 from the list for your protection. Let me know if anyone else gets an email. One more alert - if you have your system set to hide file extensions, you won't know the attachment is an .EXE file, or some of the other extensions it uses. The filenames will usually be BADTRANS.TXT.EXE which will look like BADTRANS.TXT if you have your extensions hidden. You won't see the .EXE Other filenames may be used, and the message you receive will say something like "Look to the attachment", or one report said the message was "You are FAT". So, you should set your system to show extensions so you can see the whole name. Hope this is helpful. We've had this virus, and a couple more, playing around on a number of lists that I'm on. You can set most e-mail list up where attachments can not be sent through the list. I have an e-mail list, and that's how I set it up. Also, there is a very simply way not to get this virus....just do not click on the attachment. If you don't open it, you don't get it. If you get an attachment that you feel is real, and yet you're not sure, delete it. If you think it's important, and can't bring yourself to delete it, then open a hotmail account and send it there. Hotmail scans all attachments for viruses before opening them. The best thing though...is just not to open them. I never do. If someone is sending you family info, it can almost always be copied and then pasted into e-mail, without need of an attachment. To copy, highlight what you want to send, and then hit Ctrl and C at the same time. To paste, open the message you want to paste in, click on the spot you want it to go, then hit the key Ctrl again, and this time the letter V. I've sent 30 pages of text this way before.
