They sell a commercial version of it, but to protect their high paying commercial accounts they give the free version to thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of web surfers world wide. Those are the people most likely to encounter a new "wild" virus and report them. GRISOFT adds a new virus definition file to their program as soon as they are reported. The free version is the way they find new viruses. I've been a ROOTSWEB supporter and list owner for years (MIDDLETON-L@ROOTSWEB.COM) and I think your suggestion that ROOTSWEB become some sort of genealogy police and prevent poor people from joining is just plain dumb. Rootsweb has the best Spam filters ever designed and the type of attachments that carry viruses cannot go out to their list. Why would they screen out people just because of the anti-virus program they choose? The amount of information a person has to share is not determined by their virus detector. Rootsweb has a job to do and for years they were supported by donations, in fact, being a list owner is usually proof that a person has donated to Rootsweb. Most of us donated heavily in the early days of Internet genealogy. I'll match every receipt you've got for your donations to Rootsweb. I'm not cheap or dumb. I get my facts together before I fire off an email. I DON'T THINK YOU DO. I suggest you check http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_grsft.cfm before you publicly criticize others. I wish ROOTSWEB had a filter for stupidity but they don't. Grant Johnston, Chico, CA Searching for JOHNSTON, JOHNIKEN, MIDDLETON, WILKINSON, and related names in AL. MS. LA. and TX.

    3. Grant, noticed you are researching Johnston - my late husband was Donald D. Johnston, Sr. born and buried in Alamance County, NC. Can't add too much to your research (if any)but can supply dates of Don's birth, death and the births of his sons and his grandchildren. --- GWJCAL@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 7/24/01 4:20:19 PM Pacific Daylight Time, > jhubbard@mcn.org > writes: > > > > It's too bad the lists can't make having and using Norton or > Macafee a > > requirement of joining....
