Pay for Census takers was affected by the number of names they took...so some were "overzealous" in getting all the names of the family, because it meant more money in their hands...besides what did a few more names on the Census hurt anyway? Also, a neighbor might have given them the names and included everyone, your grandmother, too...sometimes they were hard of hearing, and misunderstood what they were being told... It was totally different from the way it is today...You never saw the form, but the Census taker wrote on the ledger, and he would not let you see what he had written...so Your grandmother was probably at her home with her children and your g-grandparents were asked if they had any kids, to which they responded with the long list of names... One funny one in RR County Texas where the Census says "Missouri Belle West" but the actual name was "Miss Zora Belle West." >From: jgpark@juno.com >To: MISSISSIPPI-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [MISSISSIPPI] Re: mystery or not? >Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 21:05:43 -0500 > >Larry, > I had a similiar happening with my grandfather.
