Thanks, Everette. You're exactly right, I was trying to find the MS 1900 census by using the search ancestor block, and when you do it from there, MS is not listed. I did what you said and scrolled further down the page where the states are listed and sure enough there was MS. I'll try it again and I appreciate your help and also thank you to all of you who replied. Peggy Dyas
Hi Peggy, Everyone seems to be missing the point. The 1900 census is available at Ancestry and Mississippi is also available. The problem is that Mississippi is one of the few states that has not yet been indexed and therefore, you can not access the Mississipp pages using the search capability. If you sign-in to Ancestry and go to the 1900 census, then page down below the search section and you will find a listing of all states including Mississippi. Click on Mississippi and you will get a county listing. If you know the county, click on the county and you will get a listing of the enumeration districts usually with a brief description of the area within each district. From this point, you will need to do a page by page search for your ancestors. Thanks again, Wanda. That book "Fever, Floods, Faith" must be out of print. I went to Amazon and used copies start at $65.00! Maybe I can try and get a copy through an interlibrary loan. I'm in Virginia. I would be interesting in reading what it says about Moorhead. A cousin wrote a short book about growing up in Moorhead. It is "Mountain Moonshine to Delta Gumbo" by William Wilson Ferguson. I don't know if it is still in print. I got my copy about 15 years ago. There isn't a whole lot about Moorhead itself, but is more about Mr. Ferguson's family who lived there around the Depression era. Peggy Dyas
Hi Wanda, I look forward to having you join the group and add what you might remember about Moorhead. I have on loan, several yearbooks (1937-1940) from Sunflower Agricultural High School and Junior College. What's interesting is how many kids from neighboring towns/counties went to college there (it was a two-year college.) Some of the towns were Moorhead, Indianola, Inverness, Sunflower, Blaine, Ruleville, Drew, Greenwood, and many others. The grammar school there was called Moorhead Consolidated School. The college is now called Mississippi Delta Community College. They have an alumni association, but I'm not sure if I would be able to track down students who were there in the 1930s when my mother attended. I guess I could try writing to the college and see if they have a historian or archives or whatever. I've searched all over the net (including the Library of Congress, American Memory section) but haven't been able to find any Depression-era photos of Moorhead. The only photo I've been able to find is of the railroad crossing made famous by the phrase, "where the Southern crosses the Yellow Dog" with an accompanying history which has actually been interesting to read. Peggy: There is a book "Fever, Floods, Faith ???" published by Marie Hemphill which has some Moorhead History in it. I think Marie is native of Indianola. But the Moorhead section also mentions the "Yellow Dog". She hits some hilights on all the surrounding Delta towns and villages. I want to thank everyone who responded to my request about vital records for Blue Springs. I haven't gotten to all the e-mails as yet, because of two sick children in my care. But I am always surprised to the quick response to questions and the many helpful suggestions I receive. I really appreciate all the help from this list. I think genealogists are the best of the best. Thanks, Carol
