Hopefully someone in the list knows something about the following Smith family: CHARLES ROANE SMITH was born 1811 Botetourt Co., VA.He was a presbyterian minister and served in various states, including NC, AL, GA, and eventually settled in Grenada Co., MS where he died leaving his wife who lived into the late 1800s. They had a son SAMUEL PRICE SMITH, who was born in Benton Co. (also known as Calhoun Co.) AL in 1846. Samuel Price had seven children, among them was SAMUEL PRICE SMITH II who moved to Dallas, TX where SAMUEL PRICE SMITH III was born. Another son of S.P. II was RANDOLPH SMITH also of Dallas, TX. Any help would be appreciated and I'd be happy to share other information about this family. Poupee Smith
Hi all. I live only about an hour away from Ft. Wayne IN library. They are the second largest Genealogy Library in the country. Second only to Salt Lake City. I go often. They have tons and tons of material for research which includes all parts of the country. They have all census on microfilm for the entire country, and thousands of other materials. I have decided to offer to do look-ups and offer some assistance for a small fee to help me with the cost of fuel, parking, copies, postage, etc. Let me know if you are interested in any look-ups from there. Please email responses directly to me at rexwb@jayco.net so that we do not clutter the list with the responses. Include the word "Look-up" in the subject line so I don't miss your messages. Dear Albert, The names you mentioned do not ring any bells...but I know very little about the Gibson side of the family... My great-greatgrandmother was Malverda Gibson, daughter of John P. and Margaret J. Williams Gibson. She married Will Merriweather, and Margaret Susanna Merriweather (later Porter) was my paternal greatgrandmother. I knew her when I was a young woman. Malverda had a sister named Elvira, who may have married a Tedford. Other siblings, according to U.S. Census Records (1860 and 1870, taken near Cherry Hill, Calhoun Co. and Black Hawk, Carroll Co.), were: Asberry Francis Susan Martha Mary Rebecca My family did not even know Malverda's family name until I started this genealogical search....According to family legend, Will Merriweather left Malverda when my greatgrandmother (Margaret, aka Maggie) was about six years old, along with Maggie's younger brother, Louis/Lewis Merriweather, and went with his family back to Arkansas, Tennessee, or Kentucky...no one knows for sure. Malverda later married Newell Autry Felts in 1894 in Yalobusha Co. Mr. Felts raised the two children, along with other children Malverda and Mr. Felts had after they were married. I do know that Margaret and John P. Gibson were married on January 3, 1843 in Monroe Co. (Aberdeen), and Joseph Gibson posted the bond and served as a witness...Joseph Gibson's will is filed in Monroe Co., but John P. Gibson was not an heir or a recipient of any proceeds of the estate.... Any help will be appreciated. Janice Branch Bivens Native Mississippian Albert H. Boyd wrote: > Hi Janice, > I am Albert Boyd. PLEASE REPLY TO: eamessinger@bigfoot.com ----------------------------------------- Hello, I am in need of help or suggestions on my grandmother and her parents. -- SURNAMES --- I Am researching the names of Apffel, Siebert, Reeb, Noesser, Quinn, Creel and Lorio of LA & MS area. --- MARY ANNA LORIO, my grandmother, was born in Louisiana, I know not which parish, on July 21, 1862. She married my grandfather, Albert Charles Creel, in Harrison County, Mississippi on July 19, 1879. They reared 9 children in Harrison County, Mississippi in the Handsboro area which is now Gulfport and lived there until Albert Charles Creel died. --- MARY ANNA LORIO died in New Orleans on April 24, 1929 and both she and her husband are buried in St. James Cemetery in Harrison County,Gulfport, MS --- When I started searching three years ago, all I had was birth and death dates which I obtained from the headstones in St. James Cemetery in Harrison Co., MS. I have obtained a copy of the marriage license but it did not give parish of Louisiana where she was from nor did it give any information as to her parents. --- The only information I have on her parents is from the death certificate of MARY ANNA LORIO and it states "Mother, ELLEN QUINN, from Ireland and father, ANTHONY LORIO from Italy. I have no idea when either of her parents came over, where in Ireland and Italy they came from, where they emigrated to, where they married, nor where they lived in Louisiana. --- On the census in Mississippi that I have found her on, it only lists her as being from Louisiana. --- If anyone has any information on QUINN/ LORIO's please get in touch with me. If anyone can offer any suggestions as to how I can find where in Louisiana she was born or some way to find out more about her parents please let me know. Thought the list would find the follow of interest. It is the roster for Company 5412 taken from the Official Annual of District "G", Fourth Corps Area, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This was my father's company. It includes the names of more than 170 men from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida who served in this company. There are 31 companies listed in the annual, including 7 African-American companies. So the annual contains more than 6,000 names of those who served in CCC companies in 1936 in the northern Gulf Coast region of the three states. Unfortunately, I can't make all those names available -- at least not any time soon. But perhaps the annual is available elsewhere. Woodrow Wright, Selma, Ala. Lykes Yoemans, Arcadia, Fla. ARMY PERSONNEL 1st Lt. F.O. Rudesill, Commanding 2nd Lt. Collins Cameron, Exchange Officer 1st Lt. Dave Berman, Camp Surgeon Mr. J.S. Mallett, CEA COMPANY 5412, recruited from the vicinity of Plant City, Arcadia, Bradenton, and other West Coast Florida towns, arrived on the scene of its CCC endeavors to find a camp site already constructed in the scrub pine sand hills of South Alabama, by a departing Second Corps Area outfit, Company 230, which had moved from Collins Cameron Uriah, Alabama, to Citronelle in June, 1935, and gone on to Winnemucca, Nevada, in July. Since that hot day in the middle of August 1935, Company 5412, has proceeded on the theory that, if it wanted anything, it had to be by concentrated effort. Finding that "life in the woods" could be made pleasant by getting things done, the Company produced the men who could turn the trick. At the time this is being written, every job but the three top kitchen ratings is held by some member of that band of raw conditioning camp recruits, who rolled off the train in Citronelle, after riding for two days and eating cheese sandwiches, and then conditioned in its civilian clothes for two weeks of drill and work. During the fall, the Company was finding itself and its capabilities, LEM's from the departed Company 230, and a cadre gathered from Youngstown, Florida, and Chunchula, Alabama camps held the ratings and "dished out" the instruction. An intensive and extensive camp beautification program was promptly inaugurated and is still being energetically prosecuted, materially aided by the fact that; several nurseries specializing in evergreens are situated in the surrounding country. Many an extra fatigue detail has toiled over the transplanting of shrubbery and has assisted in the uprooting and packing of shrubbery designed for beautification of neighboring camps and for the District "G" Headquarters at Fort Barrancas. Visitors to the camp always leave impressed by the beauty which has been wrought on the bare sand hill over which the Company buildings sprawl, in a large hollow square. Favorite sports are tennis, ping pong and swimming, with one tennis court in constant play and another in the process of building. Captain L. W. Pickett, 13th CA., and Lieutenant J.B. Webb, 39th Inf., the first officers, were succeeded by Captain Henry B. Hart and First Lieutenant Gaines E. Maxwell, both of the 310th Cav. Lieutenant Maxwell was transferred and replaced by 1st Lieutenant Harold W. Gourgues, Inf., CASC, Beauregarde and now, June 4, Captain Hart is turning the Company over to another cavalryman, 1st Lieutenant F.O. Rudesill, 31Q Cav. The Company was served for a short time by R.C. Carlisle, Educational Adviser, who was replaced early in February, 1936. Since that time John S. Mallett, an EEP teacher from Mobile, Alabama, has served in that capacity.
Edye, Sorry I'm a little late in the discussion but, on tombstone inscriptions, "consort" was a term used if the wife died before the husband and "relict" was used if the husband had died first. I had this on pretty good authority and have since checked the death dates on husbands/wives' tombstone inscriptions and it's proven to be true. For instance, my g-g-g-grandmother's inscription reads: "Catharine McCormick, consort of Duncan McCormick, d.9/30/1831" She died some years before he did and I know they were married in 1789, because I found a record of it in their parish records in Scotland. (I shudder to imagine what my poor Presbyterian g-g-g-grandmother would think if she knew what the term might imply today!!!) If anyone has found any inscriptions to the contrary, I'd like to know, because before I started my own "survey" I'd often wondered myself. MISSISSIPPI MARRIAGES, 1826-1900 (Update adding more records for Claiborne, Jefferson, Lafayette, Noxubee, Rankin, Yalobusha, and Yazoo counties) Mississippi became the 20th state in 1817 with its capital in Jackson. To all of you who responded to my question of the meaning of "consort", the general consensus is it meant the man's wife. I have assumed all these years that wife was the real meaning but had to be sure. And to those of you that said mistress, hey it adds spice to our imagination. During research of my husband's family, I've found that a man and a woman would decide to become a family and began the process prior to the benefit of marriage. Quite often a couple were together a number of years, had children together but had to wait until a circuit preacher could get by to actually marry them. ===== Edye Higgins Byhalia, MS ====== Friends are angels that lift us to our feet when our wings forget how to fly.
