Most of the people in Washington do what they want to do regardless of how many letters, emails or phone calls they get, I dont waste my time with them any more and all I can say is this GOVERNMENT is not the same as our founding Fathers started it. If A. Lincoln were alive today he would not have any chance of being elected, if you are not rich or big business in this country forget it, but I still have to say it is the best country around, but everything is money if you dont have it, forget about it. Bobby
I am female,I am disabled,I am on fixed income because I have lots of medicine to buy. Now as far as using my letter you have the freedom to compose your own. So don't knock mine just because I stood up for the little guy. If your pocket book if full then more power to you. Most of the people I swap information with have the same feelings. Have you ever ordered one of the forms? It is less that half a page. We generate the letter from the web site with the SS# on it.How hard and time consuming can it be to take that and pull the application, copy and send it. Did I include your name any where in the letter? I don't see it any where. Then you can't and don't have to include yourself in this position. But for those of us who can't pay the amount that part of our research is out of reach for us. Do you really think they want to fully justify their reason for this. They have operated like this for a while and it didn't seem to matter.
It seems to me that it would have been much more to the point to ask Mr. Thompson to give us an honest and straight forward explanation for why his department found it necessary to raise the fees for these services. It's possible you know that due to the increased number of people involved in the genealogy process that the demands upon his office for this information justifies the fee increases. If it's possible for him to explain these increases I believe that he might be more than justified in charging more money for this service. I would hope that those of us that depend upon this information would be more than willing to pay a fair price for this service rather than poor mouth the government on the basis that most of us are disabled, or on fixed incomes and have to depend on the government for another handout. I personally don't like being included in a category that says most of us are in this position and that these increases put these services out of our reach. I don't think this is true and I believe it mars our collective position. If Mr. Davis wants to make this plea on the basis of his own position then that's fine but don't put us all in that class. I believe when one takes this position with one of our appointed officials the result is that we are all painted with an unjustified negative position and we do more harm than good. OR - probably better yet - post a message on the new message boards under "pensions" classification, and attach it to that. I had forgot that we can now include attachments to the posts. Post to either Location or Surname, or both. Original offer still stands, and open for new ideas. Excellent idea, Tina. Also, Bobbie, that is a very good idea, and one that will have great use for all researchers. I personally have no SS-7's to share, but will offer this to anyone interested in Bobbie's idea. We already have the Mississippi-L site in place, and that would be the perfect place to upload them to. If you are interested in this, attach them to email to me, I will index them and upload to the site. This might be a more permanent solution than Post-it's on WGW since the person who posts it may someday lose connection, thus the offer to share is mute. The website for the list will remain with the listowner as long as the list is here. Fill out the post-it note on the Rootsweb site where they have the SSDI. I have posted on each of mine that I have a copy and that person is my relative and I leave my web site URL, too. I have also posted a request on one that I would like to have a copy of, if anyone else happens to have it. We can only circumvent the cost to a degree. When we get down to needing one that nobody else seems to have, then we either pay the cost or forget about it. I sent my letter. It is a worthwhile project! Ethel.
I sent my letter. Hope it helps. Jackie
For those of you who would like to protest the increases in rates copy this letter I sent to Sec. Tommy Thompson and sign your name to it.Maybe with enough protest we can get something done. Secretary Tommy G. Thompson U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 200 Independence Avenue, SW, Room 639-G Washington, DC 20201 Dear Mr. Thompson, As an avid Genealogist it has come to the attention of my self and hundreds of thousand of others that we have literally been struck down by the increase in the price of the SS-5 form. This has been one of the most valuable lower priced tools we have had. They have been $7.00 up until July 1,2001. Now the cost is $27.00 for just less than a half of a page of information. We usually have the correct SS number written on the letter that is generated from the Ancestry.com web site. So it is not hard for them to be found. Most people like me doing research are disabled and on fixed incomes. So the raise in fees puts us out of reach on this. A lot of us cannot travel to look up records so we have to depend on volunteers, archives and on line records. With these SS-5 records we can find missing birth dates, parents names and ect. that may not be available elsewhere. Isn't there something that can be done to get this fee lowered to a reasonable level? Cordially,

I have suggested to rootsweb list that we have a place where we can put our SSDI's so anyone needing it wont have to pay the HIGH PRICE of it. Any one needing the SSDI of Charles Wesley EDMISTON born of Robert Luther EDMISTON and Allie COOPER, I can send it email attachment NO CHARGE!! Bobby
I just want to let everyone know that I received copies of an SS-5, the original request for a SS#. Along with the copies I was sent a notification that the fees were increasing substantially for this service as of July 1, 2001. I just received the notice in yesterday's mail. What used to cost $7.00 now will cost a whopping $27.00 even if you provide the SS#! There were other fee increases as well. The lowest fee, if I'm not mistaken, is $15.00 (I don't have the notice in front of me right now.) At these prices, the SSDI should list if the person is male or female and list their ethnicity. This should have been done years ago. Now that they are charging these exorbitant fees, the least they can do is make it easier for us NOT to order the wrong information. That's my two cents worth. Anyone else have a comment on this? Belvery Clark
In the newspaper, THE SUN, published in Kosciusko, MS., the Sept 22, 1855 edition had a list of delinquent taxpayers. One of these taxpayers was G. Y. Calcote Additional info from this edition of THE SUN or any info on G. Y. Calcote will be appreciated Wanda
Jan 3, 1846 - The "KOSCIUSKO CHRONICLE" newspaper carried the following article "At the March term of court, I shall present my account as Administrator of the estate of Stephen Calcote, deceased, for final settlement and allowance signed: James O. Calcote""" If anyone has access to the March court records, I would be glad to pay for copying, postage and time to secure copies of the documents presented at the March term of court. Any info will be appreciated Wanda

Seeking information on H. H. (Herbert) Gordon, who lived in Bay St. Louis in early 1900s. He and a Long man were in lumber business, and had dealings in S W Louisiana also. Something like Independent Naval Stores, who leased up land for timber and Turpentine. Ethel.
