    2. Dear List and List Owner - Re: SS -5 and Letters to Senators Why is this being allowed to continue? It is just as bad as the virus chatter from last month. Many have tried subtly to remind us of the purpose of the list. The owner has the where with all to end it. Do you not realize that not only are you taking up the time and computer space of our personal computers, but also all this banter is also taking up valuable storage space in the List Archives? Please be considerate and send your statements to personal e-mail addresses, not to the list. Susan Peterson .

    3. First, I apologize for adding something to this thread that has nothing to do with MS genealogy, but....... Way to go Wayne! I totally agree....I worked my rear end off for the 35 years civil service I gave the DoD (retired 1996). Worked many days hours after the normal 8 hour shift was over to make sure the job got done (no extra pay...I didn't even claim comp time the majority of the days!). Yes, I have a nice retirement annuity, but by gum, I earned it! Bennie W. White "Wayne E. 3. OK - here's a one-time effort to inject a little logic into this understandably emotional thread. First, let me state that $27.00 for a copy of a single record seems a little over the line . . . but - if an American citizen requests information from a Federal Agency, then under the law that Agency must research all available records and provide copies of all information available that is not in conflict with national security. It's not just a matter of walking to a file cabinet, lifting out a single record, and popping it into a copy machine. Incidentally, the Agency that collects those funds does not profit from them. Funds collected for such services go into the general budget fund. Second, the employees who work in the SSA, for example, are hired to serve the potential and the actual recipients of Social Security services. That means issuing SSANs, processing claims, and maintaining individual records. They are not hired to serve as no-cost records retrieval clerks for all us family historians. If you want extra service, you pay for it. Third, those records ARE NOT public records. They are the "property" of the individual that they cover and the Agency that administers public funds. Think about it . . . . do you really want me to be able to go on line and get information about you or your family that might enable some illegal activity that is detrimental to you? Fourth, and this is a personal reaction, as an employee of the Federal Government (Dept of Defense) I really take exception to the blase' presumption that Federal employees are overpaid, lazy, uncaring, and all the other outrageous proclamations in this thread. All the people that I have known in over 40 years of military and civil service have been dedicated professionals who deserve better respect from the people they serve. Wayne E. 2. Bobbye Davis
    3. I have received notes from several people expressing their feeling about me referring to disabled and also the word most instead of some. If you are looking down on disable people and are afraid to be LUMPED with them then I am sorry for all of you. But forget about the one line I wrote that upset you all and take this protest of over charging to fruition. Maybe if every one will jump in here and write the letters of protest some thing will be done. Other wise the squabbling over who does what and what words were used are of no value to this cause. I love doing my genealogy and it saddens me that I can't continue with one of the best sources we have with the SS-5 card.

    1. [MISSISSIPPI] SS-5 Thread
    2. Ken Hollingsworth
    3. Mornin' Folks, I've been watching this thread, and even though I received a few objections, I let it run. Hoping it would run it's course. The subject matter isn't off-topic to genealogy in the general sence. It isn't specific to MS genealogy, however. I think it is now time to end it. There have been a few suggestions submitted to alert the officials of your concerns on the increase of charges. I would suggest you do whatever you think needs done for your own benefit. I have also seen a couple of mails that border on personal attacks, which is not acceptable. Please end this thread and let's get back to Mississippi Genealogy. I think we have about discussed as much as needs discussing on that subject. If you object to this letter - do so in private mail - not on the list. Thanks, Ken Hollingsworth

    3. What the SSA and a lot of other Govt Agencies want you to do, is go away and not "bother" them... They have forgotten what the Oath which they signed when they went to work in Civil Service says...that they pledge to SERVE the people of this great Nation...and the increase in prices is designed to get you to stop "bothering" them...That is why it is so high... No way could an entry-level clerk cost that much, to provide that small service, and if they use higher level clerks, they are over- qualified... You can see, I have little sympathy for Government Workers, most of whom have a "cushy job" with tenure, and lots of benefits... To every one that doesn't want to SERVE the Public, get out of the way, there are ten more waiting in line to replace You... We still need a firestorm of mail upon Congress...
