Below is a "tid bit" from a Birmingham newspaper. I am passing this along in case someone in Mississippi is related to this person. Larry E. Caver, Jr. October 19, 1931, Birmingham Iron-Age: (Hattiesburg, Miss., Oct. 18) Funeral services for Miss Nora MILLS, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam S. MILLS, Harperville, Miss., who died at a Hattiesburg hospital Saturday afternoon following a week's illness, were held in Harperville Sunday afternoon. Miss MILLS was a sophomore at the Hattiesburg State Teachers College, having entered the college in the Fall of last year from Scott County Agricultural High School. Her scholastic standing was high.

Are there in Cemetery Mailing list that might have African Americans buried in either AL or MS? I know some African Americans graves were unmarked, but I am checking around, thanks. Karen Rogers Good Things are Always Happening!

Greetings fellow listers I am struggling with a dead end but perhaps finding how orphans were dealt with during the civil war may open a door. Is there a list of children that were living in orphanages in the 1860's/70's? My ggrandfather was named Meredith Leonard Stuart born 1858 in Iuka MS his sister was Susan Adeline Stuart or just Adeline/Adelaide Stuart. She was born 1854 place unknown. The mother is unknown but the father may have been Andrew Jackson Stuart per marriage license of Meredith. During the civil war the father, a confederate-possibly cavalry, was supposedly killed at the battle of seven pines but this may not have been true. It was mentioned that the mother and father after the war lived very close to each other but never found each other again. The mother was separated from the kids during the was. It was told to me that meredith and susan went to live with a family named McCullough/ McCullock. If they were put in an orphanage or wards to the state, there may be records. I am not even sure if the last name was Stuart but names and ages may exist in records. Susan Stuart went on to be a famous aerialist in Europe in the 1870's/80's and went by the name of Leona Dare. She started her career in New Orleans LA about 1870 if not younger and was taught by Thomas Hall Smith. I think that the kids ran away from the people they were staying with since she was 16 or younger and her brother was 2 years younger. He supposedly, was taught gymnastics by his sister. The problem is that Susan liked to stretch the truth so there has been a lot of wild goose chases from statements she made to the newpapers during her career. You would think with a boy with the name of Meredith, it would be easy to find, no such luck. The family that took them in at least gave him a nickname of Charley, which he went by from then on. I have been unsuccessful trying to find namesakes. Meredith could have come from the mothers side which of course is unknown. Any help or suggestions. I have inquired to the various counties of Tishomingo, Prentiss and Alcorn for other family, dead end. At Atalla county where Andrew J Stuart may have signed up with the confederate cavalry, dead end etc, etc... Chris Fox
FYI... A few "tid bits" from an old newspaper I found in some family papers. NOTE: The first marriage occurred in Alabama, but the couple lived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Larry E. Caver, Jr., Prattville, Alabama May 10, 1914, Montgomery Advertiser, Montgomery, Alabama: (Sheffield, Ala., May 9) Miss Margaret HOPKINS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N.A. HOPKINS, of this city, was given in marriage Monday morning at 9 o'clock to Mr. Elmer E. NUNN, Rev. W.F. TRUMP, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Tuscumbia, officiating. the marriage was solemnized at the home of the bride's parents, and was witnessed by only the immediate relatives of the family. After the marriage, Mr. and Mrs. NUNN left over the Southern Railway for Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where they will reside, the groom being a prosperous shoe merchant of that city. The bride was reared in Tuscumbia, and has made her home in Sheffield for a number of years. She has taught schools in numerous North Alabama towns and cities, and enjoys a wide acquaintanceship. (Camden, Ala., May 9) Miss Adibel ALFORD and Mr. Fleetoowd NEVILLE were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr.and Mrs. G.L. ALFORD, recently. The marriage came as a surpirse to their many friends. the parlor was tastefully decorated in roses and cut flowers. The bride was dainty and pretty in a suit of blue and wearing a bouquet of roses. The bride, as Miss ALFORD, was much amired among the members of the younger set... After a shower of rice the happy couple left for the home of Mr. and Mrs. Monette CURTIS, where they were entertained at a supper. (Gadsden, Ala., May 9) Rev. J.W. McBAYER, pastor of the Methodist Church at Hokes Bluff, and Miss Hattie PARRISH, of this city, were married here yesterday, Rev. J.I. WILLIAMS officiating. (Newnan, Ga.) An event of interest to a wide circle of friends and relatives was the marriage of Miss Annie BUSBEE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. BUSBEE, of Cusseta, Ala., to Mr. Henry Curtis DARDEN, of West Point, Ga., which took place in Newnan, Ga., Thursday afternoon, April 30, at 5 o'clock, at the home of the officiating minister, Rev. HANNAH, of the First Presbyterian Church. the bride was lovely in a coat of blue and carried an exquisite bouquet of white carnations. Only a few friends were present. Mr. and Mrs. DARDEN will be at home to their friends at West Point, Ga.
