Jeri: Checked my data base to date for these names. All kinds of Elizabeths but none that I could connect for you. However, my Smith lines have a lot of data still to be added. When I am through updating my data, I will let the list know, and suggest you recheck back with me. The time period along should give us something. Ed, with regard to your paragraph about being a Civil War buff, I would like to see if you have any suggestions for me. I have not been able to find out what happened to my great grandfather after 1860. His name was Joseph Abner Johnson. He was born about 1837, in Alabama - it was either in Jefferson Co. or Pickens Co. - not sure which. His father was a Randolph Johnson, born in about 1800 in Tennessee, and his mother was an Elizabeth Ashby, born in 1800 in North Carolina. They moved from Jefferson Co. to Pickens Co., and then on to Pontotoc Co., MS. They appeared as a family on the 1850 Pontotoc Co. census. On this census, Joseph Abner was listed as "Joab". The other children were Susan or Susanna - 18 yrs., Benjamin - 17 years, Jonathan or Johnathan 15, Joab - 13, and William - 9 years of age. Joseph Abner married in July of 1858 to my great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown. Sometime in either 1858 or early 1859, they moved south to Neshoba Co. where they appear on the 1860 Neshoba Co. census. Joseph is listed as being 23 and a wagon maker. They had one child, a year old - my grandfather, John R. Johnson, born in 1859. In 1861, they had a second son - James H. Johnson. But I can no longer find my grandfather listed on any census after 1860. The only thing I can think of is that he joined up with the Confederate Army, went off to war, and never came back because Mary Undine remarried within only a few years to a neighboring widower, Judge Samuel McNeil. He was much, much older than she and already had a grown son and a young daughter. The only reason I think she married him is because she had two toddlers to support and probably no visible means of support. She had either heard that Joseph Abner had been killed or perhaps never knew what happened to him. If he did come back after the War, that must have been quite a shock to find that his wife had remarried. If he died of natural causes, you would think that he could be found in some cemetery in Neshoba Co., but so far, I haven't found him. There was another Joseph A. Johnson from Neshoba Co. who fought with the 40th Mississippi Infantry Div. also known as the Neshoba Tigers, but that Joseph was born in 1844, and I DO know that there was a Joseph A. Johnson of that age who lived in the Coffeedeliah area of Neshoba Co., listed as living with a Norrel family in 1860. I actually got his military papers, and I'm pretty sure that was NOT my great grandfather. Now, my g grandfather may have been listed as either Joseph A. Johnson, J. A. Johnson (as on the 1860 census) or as "Joab" Johnson as on the 1850 Pontotoc census and also on a deed of land that he bought from a Washington Frye in 1860. So, if you can help me find him, I will be forever grateful to you. Thanks in advance for your response. Sandra, those names don't ring any bells for me or my husband but I will ask my husbands cousin as soon as I hear from her. I really don't know that much about the Leonard line but will help you as much as I can. Do you have any other Leonard names ? My husbands grandfather is William Leonard and he married an indian woman named Sunshine, their children are : Novine (also called Bob), Rupert, Edward & Edgar (twins). My husbands father is Edgar. My husband also has a great aunt who lived in Lake Charles, La. Her birth name is Ina Leonard, I rather doubt that she is still alive though, I met her at a family reunion 6 years ago and she was in her 90's then. I do have a picture of William if you think it might be helpful, if I may ask, how are you related to the Leonard's? To Edward Hall and the MS List I am looking for the Leonards of MS who had a daughter born around 1834. Her name was Simantha or Mantha Leonard. I don't know what county Simantha was from. In 1850 she married Thomas G. Malone in Ouachita Parish LA. Since Ouachita Parish is in northern LA, perhaps these Leonards were from a county in northern MS. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may know of these Leonards or anything about Simantha Leonard, b. 1834. Thank you, Sandra Van Wyk

Hi, Patti My great-grandfather was in Co A, 31st MS Infantry. His name was Augustus T. Aycock from Redland in Pontotoc County. Do you have any information or pictures on this company? Hi Ed/Sin, Holy cow, you sure know how to generate some enthusiasm on this board! Being a relatively new subscriber, I missed your earlier posts, but very much look forward to your future contributions. I see that one of your lines is Smith. My gg grandmother Eliza Smith/Smythe, b. 1803 in SC (probably near York Co.), was the daughter of James Smith/Smythe, a Patriot ancestor who was b. c. 1759 in PA, and Nannie Nair Hunt. Eliza married Matthew McCrary, b. 1798 in SC, in St. Clair Co., AL in 1822. Matthew and Eliza remained in AL for about 18 years as most of their children were born there. Where in AL remains to be seen as there is another Matthew McCrary -- also b. 1798 in SC and well documented -- who lived in Lawrence Co., AL that continues to complicate our research! Matthew & Eliza finally resurface in Tippah Co., MS on the 1850 census. Eliza is enumerated (sans Matthew) in the home of one of her sons in the 1860 Charleston, Tallahatchie census. We believe Matthew died between 1854-56 based on church and tax records, but we don't know where. To further complicate matters, the other Matthew McCrary died in 1855, smack dab in the middle of our estimated window! Eliza was last enumerated in the Water Valley, Yalobusha Co., MS 1870 census. Bottom line, we would like to find out places/dates of death, and where they both are buried. Lastly, many descendents of one of Eliza's brothers settled in Kosciusko, Attala Co., MS. Do either of these individuals or their families tie into your lines? Or anyone else's? Thanks so very much. Decided to make this my base since I have contacts to numerous counties in Ms. and because I am kin to just about everyone in S. Ms. one way or the other. Some of you know me, and that I had to take time off to do some college work. Yes I am the guy with a huge data base. Still have another month of college work. But after that I will have some time to devote to look ups etc. If I join (I already did) this list, it may bring others in who may help all of you also. So exspect others to look for me here once they know I am back doing my research on my MS lines and updating my data bases. A special note of interest for you guys, is that I am the Civil War buff guy too...So if grandpa was in the War, maybe I can help find him and put you on the right track this way. Another note, I have been learning a lot of stuff in college, in my Computer Science field. So I also have some understanding in this area also. Let's see, for those that never heard of me, I am married to THE SNAKE, and have children and grandkids all living with me. YES I am old guy went back to college. TRY IT before you knock it. Lots of animals here cats and dogs and my dog even has his own cat. Don't ask about that...I am embarrassed as is. Just shaking my head over that genealogy mess to come....(((((( ..))))) " Your turn to say hello. And tell me some surnames (MS) you are interrested in finding out more about. Give ya my favorites later. Allene, It appears that you are in the family of Wright, Godbold and Jones. I descend from John W. Goodwin b. 1820 in NC; d. Hinds Co., MS in 1905. He and brother Francis Gillespie Goodwin [Frank], Emily Goodwin McNeill, Permelia Goodwin Wright all went to Hinds Co., MS in 1854 and some later in time for the 1860 census. I have been searching this family for the last several years. My grandfather was Samuel s/o John W. Goodwin and Ann McLaurin b. 1825 SC; d. 1860 SC at her mother's with consumption. All their 4 children were born in SC before the migration. John W. married twice more having children with the last one Missouri Biggs McNair, a widow. Love to hear from you if I am correct in your lineage. Gladys Goodwin Parker in TX
This site below includes this reference. Maybe it will help clarify. "For instance, traveler Henry Knight suggested that slaves both had considerable control and that African customs remained vibrant in slave quarters. "When a slave dies, the master gives the rest day, of their [the slaves'] own choosing, to celebrate the funeral. This, perhaps a month after the corpse is interred, is a jovial day with them; they sing and dance and drink the dead to his new home, which some believe to be in old Guinea." Whether Knight's interpretation is confirmed in other sources has yet to be determined." http://dave.burrell.net/slave.html Dewayne -----Original Message----- From: Edward Hall [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, February 16, 2004 6:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MISSISSIPPI] Singing Down Funeral Sin---This is my 2nd great-grand-uncle: Malachi Watts born abt 1834 in MS. Do you know what "The Singing Down Funeral" means???? "In the CSA Co. A 31st Mississippi Infantry (Malachi led the "Singing Down Funeral"-unknown as to what this means?)--from Dr. and Mrs. W.R. Walker notes from the 1970's" Patti Patti: I am betting this refers to a style of funeral/burial service. Just like there is the New Orleans style Jazz funeral for some. I have heard of songs or sings that referred to leaving behind troubles and going to glory or gloryland (Heaven.) Bet this is close to that. However, I am going to research this one a bit further for you. Mainly because of the Civil War interest here. Will get back to you on this.
