    2. Will you be doing any other lookups while you are there? If so, I would appreciate the following compiled service records. I live near FT. Worth National Archives. The National Archives in Ft. Worth, TX only has the General Index cards for MS Confederate Soldiers (which I have my copies). However, it does not carry the Compiled Service Records for MS Confederate soldiers. Any help in getting copies of the following would be appreciated. Compiled Service Records M232 roll 44: Williams, James M. 1st MS Sharp Shooters, Co. 3. As with many things the answer is $$. These last years most states have had beget cuts and Mississippi has always had to do more with less. Most state Libraries/Archives haven't the money to provide services to out of state, non tax paying users. Not many teens volunteer to work in the archives. Anyone willing to pay at least minimum wage plus cost of copies? I believe the Archives will give you a list of professional researches on request. $15 for copies of CSA records is less that getting the copies of the same microfilm from the NARA and they are not quick either. Copies from mail in requests have to be done when the equipment isn't in use by on site users. All things considered, perhaps a trip to Jackson might be more cost effective :) Patsy

    3. Alice, I have good news and bad news. The bad news first: The E. L. Dooley that Sin located in the CSA is probably not your E. Dooley. The good news: I located Elijah J. Dooley, age 30, a farmer born in Mississippi, in the 1870 census. He was living in DeSoto County, Mississippi (Township 5 Range 9) and the Post Office was listed as Arkabutler. With him were his wife Emily, age 20, born Miss and their 8 month old child, Susan who was also born in Miss. Now you have a name and a county in Mississippi so that you can begin to focus your research on a specific area. Good Luck! Everette Carr --------- Original Message --------- DATE: Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:35:34 From: "Alice Leonard" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sin, Thank you so much for this information, now if I could only find out his full name, I'd be elated lol. This man has had me hitting the brick wall for a long time now lol. I'm not able to got to the archives in MS to do any research, I live in NY and so all my searching is done via the web, I keep hoping that maybe someone will see the name and it will be part of their line. I have no idea what county they lived in so finding them on any of the census records between 1850 and 1870 is next to impossible. I know that E. Dooley's wife Emma/Emily was in Arkansas by 1880 with the 3 children, Susan, William and Frank. So I'm assuming that E Dooley must have died between 1870 & 1880. The surnames I'm researching are: DOOLEY and McNEELEY from Ms, VANDERGRIFT, VANDERGRIFF from Tn and Ar. Again, thank you so much for your help. 2. My experience with the Archives in Arkansas has been dismal. They don't serve the public--they don't even bother to answer letters. Why they even exist is beyond me. MS Archives may be slow, but at least they do respond and will send you any info they may find for a request. If you don't live in MS, you have to mail a check for $15.00 with your written request for information. In four-to-six weeks, they will send you a letter letting you know if they found anything, you send another check, and eventually receive your order. Last time I placed an order, it took almost four months. Thank God I live in Texas! Harriet

    3. > Why don't you send a suggestion to the AR Archives I think I will,,,,a crusade of sorts. Do you, or anyone on this list, have anymore ideas except for the high school kids thing? May as well give them as many suggestions as possible. I'd like to know the idea(s) get to the main most idea person,,,I imagine just sending through the regular email thing, probably end up end file 13, if ever looked at at all. Cynical me.....I'm sure they've had the suggestions many times and still refuse to set up a lookup system, maybe for good reasons but I'd just like to hear their good reasons,,, if I ever hear back from them at all. I'll post their reply here when and if I get one. > ...I went to MS Archives > (in the old building) last Summer, and they were very helpful...they guided > me in doing the lookups, and only charged for the copy costs...a lot of > pages for about $3-$4, but you need to take your own quarters... Yep, our people here seems like they really to want to help and as interested as if the lookups are for themselves. That may be show biz but it sure makes me not mind dropping a few bucks in the donation jar when I exit. Since the archives are in the new building, they have started a card swiping system that has eleminated having to have a pocket full of quarters. I haven't used it yet but you swipe your new card and pay up, one lump sum, when leaving the archives. The new film veiwing machines or much quieter too, no more clunkity clunking. jerry jackson, ms. > > > Robert sez,,,,, > > > MS Dept of Archives and History will copy and send you your ancestor's > > > service records.
