I am looking for the Eli and Lizzie Martin family from Holly Springs, MS in Marshall County. My grandmother was Sallie Martin and she was one of six children I believe. They are in the 1860, 1870, 1880 census there.
Hazel: Can you give me any more information on your Martha Brown? Give me your information on the son's and thier children forward. You were way back in 1700. So come forward and let me see if I can make a tie in for you.By the way, this is your information"He was born Feb. 18, 1797 in Beaufort Dist. SC and she was born Sept. 19, 1976 in SC, they were married April 21, 1824 supposedly in MS. "I am guessing you meant l977 for him and l976 for her for birth dates....So if I am wrong, bring it to me from the 1700's...Smile SIN
Susan: I am still researching a bit on yours. Will see what I can come up with. By the way, the last name Kuntz is one familiar around Louisiana also. Another form of it is Kuntzler also. So keep that in mind when you are doing your look ups. I would double check some of the Historical Societies in New Orleans that keep records on the Metarie Cemetary. Also do a look up on the States Item Newspaper as well as the Picayune Newspapers of New Orleans. I think both were in press at that time. As for the Summit or McComb Area Connection, there is a Ashley Baumgartner 728 Beach Street . that is McComb I think...the phone number is 601-249-2689 and I wonder if she is kin to you...Could not think of any Billets, in or around the area. Know the Kuntz and Kuntzler names are in your New Orleans area of course. Hope this may be a good lead for you. SIN

Robert, On Saturday will you do a look up for me? My brick wall is FRANCIS M HOWARD Born Jackson Cty MS about 1844 He served with the Confederated States about 1861-1863 Then he went north and served with the Union. Sandra Sandra: The fighting on both sides interested me, so I did a look see. Came up with 62 Franicis Howards. The following is a list of just the Francis M. Howards that I came up with off of this list of 62... #48- 43 Ms. Infantry #49- 59 Indiana Infantry #50- 150 Indiana Infantry #51- 1 (Turney's) Tenn. Infantry #52- 12 Illinois Calvalry #53- 94 illinois Infantry 37---23 Iowa Infantry 38---4 Fla. Infantry 39---24 Texas Calvary 40---26 Ky. Infantry 41---2 Missouri Lt. Artilary 42---85 N.Y. Infantry 43---192 Ohio Infantry 44---85 Ohio Infantry 45---1 (Patton's) Miss. Infantry 46---3 Battalion Ms. Infantry 47---27 Miss. Infantry I was hoping to find a note in micellanous about someone being on both sides in the war. It was not uncommon. It was also not uncommon for some to take sides as they chose going back and forth a few times. As to why they were not shot or caught or if they were, (I am sure some were) history is not kind to us as regards the outcome for our genealogy purposes. So This is as close as I can get you, without giving RANKS, WHICH UNITS, ETC. However, you only gave what I saw here. So I used that to search by. The above should be considered leads only... SIN
Marjorie: I came up with 1028 possible hits. All for William Adams. Without more information to go on, I would have no way to figure out which one might be the William Adams you are looking for even hoping he is in the 1028 mentioned. So you see, here is an example of taking very little information and while I can generate some leads on 1028 possible records, that is a lot to go through without a lot of time on my hands and not knowing anything else to look for. I know the time and money that I have spent trying to do things on my own. Sometimes it is cheaper to have a more experienced person do the research. Most of them know exactly where to look. I don't have the time personally to do it all on my own. While I enjoy certain parts of it, you know when you have hit a brick wall you are probably going to have to have help. I am so pleased with the message board, because it lets me know there are many wonderful people out there willing to help and guide you along the way. Bless each and every one of you who lend your time and knowledge to people like me. Ann
Hey would I have to go to Tishomingo Co MS to get these records since that is where he signed up at?? I am wondering if they might be at the courthouse in Itawamba Co MS, Fulton, MS?? If so the were in Itawamba Co MS that would just be a trip to my home place. I may check it out. You know all the records I want with the capture and the service records it could be really expensive. I want the records on my grandfather where he registered for service and don't know if he went to service or not but need to see the record. There are several more I want also. In TX you do a search there and you send in the request and they mail it to you and you send them very little like I think I send like 3.00 or 4.00. now that is not bad but I'm thinking like 15.00 for the frist hour and who knows how long it could be to located the record and they might locate it in 10 minutes but you got to pay them that money. If I can find the record they won't be getting no money like 15.00 from me. They should not be allowed to charge such a few any ways. i think tho the Ala archieves charges the same thing. I will just have it sent to some of my relatives address in MS. If I decide to it that way. If gas keeps going up them we all will be staying home I suppose. Normally I do not reply to these type of posts, but for once I will. There are ways to get documents for less, and noone likes spending say $15.00 for records or more. But what some fail to understand, is that a lot of libraries do not have staff who are able or willing to do this kind of research for free. Nor do they have a budget to pay such folks for their time. A few volinteer Genealogists are willing to do look ups, and they set minimum standards and the price is reasonable for a lot of folks who cannot afford a trip of thousands of miles, as such would be the case if I had to go back home to look up the records. So libraries let you know as a conveniece to you that such folks are around to help. You are in no way obligated to contract for their services. It is totally up to you. Some of these Genealogists do this work for free, when they happen to be there doing their own look ups. So please consider all of this when you may need the services of a professional Genealogist to help you get pass a stumbling block. Remember, their time is valuable too, and some folks make a living that way. The cost is minimal when you consider it in this light. If you already have the name of your ancestor and his regiment then it is 15 bucks. that includes any copying. if you copy it yourself at the archives, the service records can be copied 99% of the time for under 2 bucks
Hazel, My phone connection has been down for a few days and am just catching up with a flood of Mississippi emails. In scrolling prior to deletion I picked up on the Ross name of yours. I have a long shot I've been looking at trying to unravel a Weir brick wall. My JOHN WEIR, d. 1817 Chester/Fairfield Co. SC, had a son THOMAS who ended up in Winston Co. MS were he died in the mid or later 1800s. My line is through another of JOHN's sons, CHARLES. One of the clue threads I've been trying to use in trying to find JOHN's parents are the naming patterns in many early families where children by there birth order were named for specific older family members. In research by a descendant of THOMAS, one of his daughters had the middle name of Ross. My question (sorry it took so long to get to it) is, have you come across the Weir name in any association with Ross? Thanks in advance, Butch

Judy, Altho I am Just getting started, I thot you might like to know. I have just received 2 books titled "Four Centuries on the Pascagoula" by Cyril Edward Cain and it seems that there are Davises on almost every page ! Most interesting is Samuel Davis who I have on record as married to Susannah Goff. (Page 168 of Volume II) These people I believe to be our ancestors. This Samuel I have so far found to be a Judge of the Quorem Court in 1818 and a Postmaster at Jackson C H in 1837. (I don't know what C H means) The books have dozens of Davises who may not be kin-folk, but it is fun researching them. These 2 books have been reprinted by the "The Reprint Company, Publishers" in Spartanburg, South Carolina and should be in the Jackson Co. MS library. L&S, Bob

-- Alice, I need to make a couple of corrections to my earlier message. Elijah was born in Alabama, not Mississippi. Also, the nearest Post Office in Mississippi shown on the census return is Arkabutta, not Arkabutler. Sorry! The bad news first: The E. L. Dooley that Sin located in the CSA is probably not your E. Dooley. The good news: I located Elijah J. Dooley, age 30, a farmer born in Mississippi, in the 1870 census. He was living in DeSoto County, Mississippi (Township 5 Range 9) and the Post Office was listed as Arkabutler. With him were his wife Emily, age 20, born Miss and their 8 month old child, Susan who was also born in Miss. Now you have a name and a county in Mississippi so that you can begin to focus your research on a specific area. Good Luck! This man has had me hitting the brick wall for a long time now lol. I'm not able to got to the archives in MS to do any research, I live in NY and so all my searching is done via the web, I keep hoping that maybe someone will see the name and it will be part of their line. I have no idea what county they lived in so finding them on any of the census records between 1850 and 1870 is next to impossible. I know that E. Dooley's wife Emma/Emily was in Arkansas by 1880 with the 3 children, Susan, William and Frank. So I'm assuming that E Dooley must have died between 1870 & 1880. This could be worked through the library system, and the kids, (I suggest any college level kids as well as high school) could get some credit for this. There are situations that this may help. I might do some summer time work if I find an opening for it myself to earn some credit time. I would be doing the same thing I do at home. Helping others. Folks: There are many places other than state agencys to look for records. Acestry.com has many records on file and you can order via them if you know what to order. That is why I do my research and let you know what to look for if you go that way. I found some of my family's records just by going down to the local County Court House where such records were stored. This was before anyone tried indexing files etc. such as the work done by the Mormon church. I found them in a plain old cardboard box tossed in a corner. I actually was the one to place them in alphabetical order for the next person who might think to look that way. I hated leaving the records behind, but I was able to get copies made of all that I wanted at that time.
