Becky, Rebecca, and others: These are my proven Payne lines: They descend from Ledford Payne b 9 Aug 1762 VA-KY-TN (Rev War Veteran) Thomas H. Payne b 1770/1785 in Rowan Co NC then Smith Co, TN Goodman Payne b 1808 Smith Co, TN. These are Goodman and Melinda (Holeman) Payne's children: Freeman (Alex) b 31 Mar 1855 MS Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth b Aug 1859 MS Melissa Jane b 5 Nov 1852 MS Nancy Caroline b 13 Jan 1842 LA Amanda "Mandy" b 1837 MS Thomas b 1839 MS Joseph Jackson "Joe" b 14 Mar 1847 MS Jesse b 1858 MS Harriet b 1850 MS William W. b 1843 MS. I have an extensive family tree on all the above Payne's except: Thomas and Harriet. I just have their names and date of birth. We may connect but I have my doubts if you have brother of Thomas J. named James W. (Your Thomas J. Payne and my Thomas Payne's birth dates are very close Mine 1839 your 1840. Look at your census to see where Thomas J. Payne's parents are from. This may help some. There were a large number of different Payne's listed in Smith Co, Warren Co, TN as well as KY, VA, NC. Hope this may help: Have a Blessed Evening: Bob Moore in MS [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rebecca Roberts" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 17, 2004 6:00 PM Subject: Re: [MISSISSIPPI] Family of Thomas J. I am searching for information on William "Bill" Page from Newton or Neshoba Co. Ms. who married Mary Etta Spence or Freeman my cousin, btw. 1940-1943. Would some one volunteer to look for that marriage in each of these counties Newton,Neshoba and Lauderdale Co? She and Bill did not have children and I do not know when they divorced or where. Mary Etta was born January 11,1927 to Jim Spence and Nancy Etta Keen. She died approx. August 17,1969 and is buried unknown. We are searching for her remains at this time. There are two stories about her death. One she died in Hurricane Camilla and the other is that she died in New Orleans. She was also married in Lauderdale Co. to Howard J. Deason of Kemper Co.She used her step fathers last name on this marriage . His name was Bruce Freeman of Newton Co. Her third Husband was Leroy Owens possibly from Mobile. The fourth husband or companion was UnKnown Messer. If any one recognizes Bill Page please contact me. I am hoping that I can trace her trough help form this family also.
I wonder if someone in the Covington County, MS., area of MS. could straighten me out? Mary Pickering, daughter of John Benjamin Pickering and Rachel Mahala Speed, had two husbands: (1) James Earl Harrell, Sr., and (2) Eugene F. "Gus" Guthrie. It is my underestanding that James Earl Harrell, Sr. and wife, Mary Pickering Harrell, had two children: (1) Clara Ruth Harrell (married Albeert Ab B. Jones, my great uncle) and (2) Earl John Harrell who married Gracie F. Quates. I always thought that the father of Clara Ruth Harrell was the son of Thomas Jefferson Harrell and Hester Mixon Harrell, and, therefore Clara Ruth was an aunt to my grandmother, Martha Missouri Harrell Speed (married Benjamin Franklin "Bee" Speed). In my research, I've never been able to identify a James Earl Harrell, Sr., although everyone who has information shows that Mary Pickering married James Earl Harrell, Sr. My question is, who is he? Who were his parents? Where is he buried and what are his dates? I know that Clara Ruth Harrell was closely related to my mother, Lavinia Speed Knight. Here are the children of Thomas Jefferson Harrell, Sr., and Hester Mixon Harrell, so far as I know: Martha Missouri Harrell b 08/10/1864 d 09/14/1933 Joseph W. Harrell b 10/05/1868 d 04/01/1896 (who did he marry?) Viola B. Harrell b 1869 Thomas Jefferson Harrell, Jr. b 10/27/1872 - 01/03/1929 - never married Unnamed daughter B&D 04/06/1875 If you can help me untangle this line, I would be most grateful. Please contact me at: [email protected] Thanks. Lonnie Knight, Jr.

Rebecca: I have a Thomas Payne b 1839 in MS. He is the son of Goodman and Melinda Haleman Payne. I have nothing else on this particular Payne. My records indicate he is either the 2nd or 3rd born child of this marriage. These Payne's came from Smith Co, TN via Pickens Co, AL into Lauderdale Co, MS then into Newton Co, MS and then on into Leake, Attala and Yazoo Co, MS. Do you recognize any of these names or the trails? Have a Blessed Evening.
