I recently found out that this lady died on 3 Mar 2001. She lived in Laingsburg. To any of you who may remember my search for Commerce in Shiawassee County, the mystery has been solved. I was mailed an actual copy of the document from Canada and it definitely says....Peter W. Kinney in the Town of Corunna in The County of Shiawassee, State of Michigan. It was dated Dec 22, 1890. It's definitely my Peter. Thank you to all of you who help with county information, etc. I knew the minute I tried to read the Commerce part of his address that it was actually Corunna. Now I need your help again. Peter W. Kinney was living in Bennington Township in 1880, but had previously lived in Saginaw. He was in Saginaw when he married in 1854 and in 1860 and 1870. Then in 1880 in Bennington. My brother has an old bible with his name written on the inside cover page and the date Dec 27th, 1882 and it says Corunna, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Now we have this land transfer written and addressed to him in Corunna in Dec 1890 sooooooo now I could use some help again. Does anyone have any local directories or anything from the Corunna area that they might be able to look in. Peter W. KINNEY is the name. His wife was Anna M. Willson KINNEY. They had nine children born between 1855 and 1877, but only four of them lived to adulthood. The oldest was Daniel W. Kinney who married in Saginaw in 1887. I'd be interested in any help or suggestions anyone can offer. Peter's obituary (he died in Pontiac State Hospital in 1911 suffering from Epileptic Insanity) says all of his children prededed him in death. I can't find anything on Belle Kinney b. July 24, 1862 or George W. Kinney b. Dec 6, 1864. I have a suspicion that Belle married a man with the surname Schooley, but I have never been able to locate any information on her. I know that Belle Schooley would have outlived Peter Kinney as she was still alive in the 1950's .... that is....if I'm on the right track. George W. Kinney seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Maybe Peter disowned the surviving children when he was committed to the hospital as his son was the one who brought the charges as far as I can tell. Please contact me if you have any information that might help. I'd really appreciate anything you can tell me. I now have him attached to his rightful family, but still have some blanks to fill in. Thanks for any help you can offer. You're really a great help. Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia
Yesterday I was told by a cousin that several years back a man by the name of Gerald or Jerry Jones went to the library of Mich. (Lansing) and found her a very important document. This Jones was working on the Munger branch that was part of his tree and it was part of our tree too. I tired to find him yesterday and called several Jounces in Owosso. The Gerald on Sycamore Street was not my guy. If anyone has knowledge of anyone doing the Munger tree, who is or isn't a Jones, could you let me know. Yours truly, Lynn Najduk Mills

Thanks to all of you who tried to help me with this one. I looked at maps and read about county boundary changes and all....until I'm blue in the face, but to no avail. The Deed of Transfer was coming to Peter W. Kinney from his father's estate in Canada so maybe that is where the error was made in showing his address as Town of Commerce, Shiawassee County, Michigan. I think I'll try looking at other options now and give up trying to move Commerce into Shiawassee county!! LOL! Thank you all very much for your help. I learned a lot and think I have a better grasp of the area even though I couldn't find exactly what I was hoping for. Best regards, Bonnie
Hello everyone, Has anyone ever heard of a Town of Commerce in Shiawassee County? I have been told of a Deed of Transfer of land in Canada to my gg-gf in 1890 at the time of my ggg gf's death. The deed was addressed to Peter W. Kinney, "The Town of Commerce in Shiawassee County. Was this just an error or might there have been a town called Commerce in Shiawassee at one time? How far would Commerce in Oakland County have been from the Shiawassee border? (Sorry to ask this, but I live in Australia and my maps aren't that accurate as to distance.) I know my gg gf lived in Saginaw at various times and also in Bennington Township, Shiawassee Co. He also has signed a bible as Peter W. Kinney, December 27th, 1882 Corunna, Shiawassee Co., but I've no record of and/or can't find anything resembling Commerce in Shiawassee Co. Can anyone help with this? Many thanks, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia
Hello Listers: I want to thank everyone that has been helping me with my William Mason Research! I have another favor to ask. I need a lookup on the 1860 census for the following: 1860 R. Y. Young Shiawassee Pg. 769 1 W. Owosso. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks. Karen
Hello Shiawassee Listers: I am hoping to connect with someone that can help me in my research. I have been working on this family for about 6 years. I recently obtained an obituary of a Jennie M. Mason Young. She died in LaPorte Co., IN. Her obit indicated she married R.G. Young in 1863 in Owosso, Michigan and had 2 step children. I think R.G. Young was married first to her sister, Mary Mason, who died. I can not locate any information on this and I have not been able to locate R. G. (Russell) on the 1860 census. I have located William Mason in 1860 with his family in Oakland County, where I believed he died. I would like to locate a death record for Mary Mason Young and a marriage record for R.G. and Jennie Mason. Is this something someone could help me with? Karen
Hello Karen: Have you tried Central Michigan State. Go to (www.lib.cmich.edu/clarke/shiahtm/shia2.htm) . Then when it says select a page inter page 258. On that page is a biography of Daniel Young. His father was Emanuel Young, Jr. Born abt 1765 in Montgomery Cty, NY and died abt 1858 in Onondago Cty, NY. The biography says that Daniel was the eldest of 6 children. I hope this will help Bernie ([email protected])
Hello Listers: I want to thank everyone for their input and suggestions on how to locate the parents of Russell G. Young b. 1826-1828. I don't have any proof yet, but have some ideas. I'm wondering if anyone can do a census lookup for me? 1860 Young, R.Y. (could be a G). Shiawasse Pg. 769 1 W. Owosso Twp. I located 2 Young's in Owosso Twp. in 1870. Emanuel b. 1802 in NY and James b. 1830 in MI. I am wondering if this Emanuel could be Russell's father and James his brother. Thanks again for everyone's help! Karen

Hello Listers! I am hoping to locate someone that is familiar with this Young family. Russell G. Young b. abt 1827 in Owosso d. 1909 IN; married Mary Mason abt. 1860. I believe Mary Mason's parents are William and Margaret Mason found in Oakland County. Russell and Mary had 2 sons, Frederick Mason Young and Ellsworth Young. Mary must have died between 1861 and 1863 because Russell married a Jennie M. I have been unable to locate any of his marriage records. I am interested in located Russell's parents and his marriage records. Any help would be greatly appreciated Karen

Trying to find information on my grandfather William H. Turner, born ca. June 26 1865?, died 29 of March, 1969. His wife, died at an early age of cancer, around 1920. They are both buried in ---hill cemetery, above city of Owosso. Had a son William buried there also. William H. Turner was oldest Mason in state of Mich. at his death, age 97 I think. Would appreciate any information because I do know there are descendants living in Owosso yet today. Thanks.
Can someone please tell me where the Hawkins schoolhouse is. The obit for Daniel R. Munger says that this place was Kirby + there is a cemetery across from it. Would you know the name of the cemetery? Thanks, Lynn
Help! I just came from the Burton Historical Collection @ the Main Detroit Library. (It is a wonderful place) My husbands gr. gr. gr. grandfather was Hiland Jones, son of Peter + Eunice Jones of NY. He was b. in NY. I don't know when they immigrated to Shiawassee Co., but he was here by at least by 1844 because he had wed a Rebecca N.(mostly called Nancy) Miller of Ohio. The first child that I can find was Levi, born In Mich. around 1845. They settled in Hazleton twp and had 8 - 10 children depending on which census you believe. Hiland Jones also went by the name of Esquire or Squire H. Jones. He died Oct. 1, 1872 in Hazleton by poison. That is all it says on GENDIS and I saw it for myself in the Shiawassee Co. Clerks records. I couldn't understand how a farmer called Esquire could die of poison. Then yesterday I find that his 4th child, Adelia Jones (b. 1856 MI) was in the Kalamazoo Asylum for the Insane (on Asylum Road) in Kalamazoo by 1900. She was there for the 1910 + 1920 census. I have tried to find her in my new 1880 census CD's with no luck and we all know that 1890 will always keep her secretes. What papers where published in Shiawassee Co. in that time period in case my hunch is right + she poisoned her father? Were people who did things like that sent to the asylum instead of jail? Who would have arrested her back then? Did the county have jurisdiction? I'm very willing to travel 1 hour to Shiawassee + look at the records + etc., I just need to know where to look. Please someone, point me in the direction! Lynn Mills looking for Palmer, Jones, Miller, Taubitz, Novinger, Miller, Case + Monahan
We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted the BURIAL LIST for the Shiawassee County, Michigan Poor Farm. Once again, the material was generously sent to us by Dale and Linda Willett. The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.)
