    1. [MISHIAWA-L] Campbell/Waterman/Gould
    2. Taunji
    3. Dear List, I am researching my Campbell, Waterman and Gould families in Shiawassee County, Michigan. I first found Robert C. Campbell in the 1855 STATE census of in Joliet, Will Co., Illinois in 1855. I could not find a trace of him after that date. I finally found him on the 1870 census of Shiawassee County. It showed his first child was born in Illinois in 1854. He is listed in Shiawassee county with his wife Mary and their seven children. All children born in CANADA, except the youngest who was born 1868 in Michigan. So that tells me he went to Canada for about 14 years. I am trying to trace his children and locate some cousins in this line. Robert C. Campbell was born Isle of Wight just off the Southern shore of England. His wife Mary Gould was born in Scotland. I do not know when they immigrated to the USA. I do know that they married in 1843, place unknown. Robert C. was born 1814/15 & died 1979 in Shiawassee County. His wife Mary GOULD Campbell was born 6 Aug. 1826 & died 20 Feb. 1908 . Robert C. is buried in the Pine Tree Cemetery and Mary Gould Campbell is buried at the Corunna Cemetery. Their seven children were: Margaret Ellen, George W., Robert, Susan, Edward, Ellen Jane or Jane Ellen and Minnie B. In the 1880 census of Shiawassee County, it shows Mary Gould Campbell as a widow with all of her children living with her except the oldest child Margaret E.Campbell. Margaret had married Christopher Columbus Waterman and was living next door to her new in-laws, the Benjamin Morse Watermans. I found their marriage record , but I can't find a marriage record for the other 6 children. I am wondering if there is a data base of marriage records in Shiawassee county that I could search on line. I found one at the Shiawassee District Library, but it does not have any records of these marriages. They may not have married in Shiawassee County, but I am quite sure that some of them did. I also do not know where Mary Gould Campbell died. She is buried at Corunna, but may have died in another place. I think most of them would have married in the 1880's and 1890's. Does the library have other marriage records in their custody that I could write and get the information I'm looking for? This Campbell family resided in North Newburg. at least part of this family were Seventh Day Adventists. I do not know when they became members of that faith. I know that Margaret and Susan Campbell were both members of that church. A long and rambling letter, but I know of no other way to explain my Campbell quest. I welcome any suggestions and information. Taunji Stites Waterman Gresham, Oregon --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 2. Claudine & Jorg Schlieffers
    3. Hello: I'm hoping someone on this list can help me find the descendants of Sophia Elise Ploch (born 1878 Germany) who married a Hoskin (sp) and was living in Owosso in 1948. As I live in England, it is quite hard for me to contact all the Hoskins in Michigan (never mind the US). Sophia's children or grandchildren are entitled to an inheritance. If you have any suggestions about how I could go about obtaining death records for this county after 1948 or any other ways of finding Sophia's relatives, I would much appreciate it. Thank you for your help. 2. There is a Brant Twp just north in Saginaw County that has a good-sized township cemetery. I have several ancestors buried there. Brant is a crossroads located at Brant and Hemlock Roads about 4 miles SW of St. Charles, MI. The cemetery is a mile or so west of Brant. Maybe that helps? 3. Hello fellow subscribers: I'd like to find out if anyone has information about KATE ALDRICH (born about 1859 in Michigan), who married ROBERT WILMOT OLIVER in 1879 (unknown marriage location). She may have had a sibling named H. P. ALDRICH (sorry I don't know his first name). He was born near Laingsburg, Shiawassee County. He was born about 1855. He resided on a farm and later moved to Nebraska where he was in charge of Kate's brother-in-law's lumberyard. Any information about KATE or H. P. ALDRICH would be greatly appreciated. 1. [MISHIAWA-L] CIVIL WAR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH
    2. Bonnie McVicar-Briggs
    3. Posted to this list for Jan Sedore by list manager. {copy} CIVIL WAR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH Have you run into dead ends in tracing your Civil War ancestor? Some answers will be presented on Saturday, September 20, 2003 in a program jointly sponsored by the Sunfield Library, the Sunfield Historical Society and Curtenius Guard Camp 17 of the Son of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Jim Lyons, a Past Department Commander and presently G.A.R. Records Officer for the SUVCW will be the speaker for the day. The program will start at the Sunfield Library at 10:00 a.m. with a brief history of the G.A.R., a presentation on the records they generated and how they may be used in genealogical research. Also discussed will be how to secure military service and pension records from the National Archives. We will conclude with a survey of resources available at the Sunfield Library. We will then move across the street to view a small Civil War camp set up in the side yard of the G.A.R. Hall. A brief presentation will be made on life “in the field” during the war by SUVCW members in uniform. Living conditions, food and food preparation and a rifle firing demonstration will be covered. Following this exposure to the war experience, we will move inside for a tour of the G.A.R. Hall and a discussion of the post war experiences of these men. We will examine their role in the community, the G.A.R. and the Hall with its contents. The Hall in Sunfield is like a time capsule. It has been in continuous use by the G.A.R and its successor Allied Orders since it was completed in 1899. Most of the things brought into the Hall by the veterans are still there. Of particular interest are the chairs. Not having funds to purchase furniture for the new Hall, each man brought a chair from home for the meetings. His name was painted on the chair back and the unit he served with during the war was indicated. When he died, his Comrades added the date of his death to the information on the chair. The Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. We hope that you will join us on September 20, at 10 a.m. at the Sunfield Library, which is located on Main Street in Sunfield, Michigan. If you desire further information, call the library at (517) 566 – 8065 or email the Sunfield Historical Society at [email protected] This could provide a huge breakthrough in your research. 1. [MISHIAWA-L] Leaving on holiday soon
    2. Bonnie Barnes
    3. I just wanted to say thanks again for the help I received recently on my HAMMON / WILSON /WILLSON connection; particularly to Mary Gillet who was a huge help. We are off on a major holiday soon and won't be home for a couple of months so I will be unsubscribing for awhile. If anyone wants to discuss any of the above with me just email me directly at [email protected] and I will get back to you as soon as possible. It seems that almost all the Wilson's at Roselawn Cemetery are connected to my family...plus others in Shiawassee. Thanks again to you all for your help. 1. Re: [MISHIAWA-L] Obituary look-up -- thanks for help
    2. Bonnie Barnes
    3. Firstly, I want to thank everyone who wrote and told me to try again on the 1870 Census put on the web by the Library of Michigan. I don't know what I did wrong .... unless I was just giving too much information to the search engine. I've now learned to 'keep it simple' and get more success. It sure took a long time to load though. Anyway, I'm a very happy camper now that I have a printout of the 1870 census in front of me. Also, someone has made an offer to try to help with obits, especially those from the later years...so we'll wait and see what happens. I sure hope they are the type that are loaded with information, but that's not usually what happens on this side of the family. Traditionally they were Quakers and farmers....and didn't do anything to make waves. Thankfully the Quakers kept very good records. Anyway, I have learned heaps from my posting. Thank you all for offering advice and assistance and even information from what appears to be a great atlas of the world. You're a very good bunch of genealogists. I have tried to thank everyone directly, but just incase I missed someone...you are included in this message. Kind regards, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia

    1. [MISHIAWA-L] Obituary look-up help please
    2. Bonnie Barnes
    3. I haven't been on this list for quite awhile, but am currently in need of some Shiawasse expertise. I am trying to follow a line of my Wilson family who was born in Michigan abt 1841. Her name was Caroline G. WILSON and she married George A. HAMMON on December 18, 1866 in Springfield Twp., Oakland Co., MI. I have Carrie Wilson on the 1850 and 1860 census records in Springfield Twp, but cannot find her and her new husband on the 1870 census. In 1880 they are living in Perry Twp., Shiawassee County and both Carrie Wilson. Caroline G. Hammon died 6 Feb 1920 to the best of my knowledge, but I don't seem to have the source for that information. George A. Hammon died in 1912 and they are both buried at Roselawn Cemetery Section C, Row 4. I know at least one child was born to this union and she was Bessie Hammon, born 20 Jan 1875. My records show that she was born in Manchester, Michigan, but I'm afraid I don't know where that it. The only Manchester I see is in Jackson, MI. Would that be right for the 1870 to 1880 time frame? I can't seem to find any of these HAMMONs anywhere in MI in 1870 using the Library of Michigan 1870 Census Index. Bessie Hammon married Lavern Clark to the best of my knowledge and both Bessie H. Clark and Lavern Clark are also buried at Roselawn Cemetery. Bessie died 15 Mar 1961 and Lavern Clark died in 1930. Bessie and Lavern Clark has a son named Hollis H. Clark b. 1904 d. 1972. He is also buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Perry, Shiawassee Co. Is there anyone who might be able to help me obtain an obituary for any and/or all of the above people whom I have listed below in a more direct manner. Caroline G. (Carrie) HAMMON d. 6 Feb 1920 George A. HAMMON d. 1912 Bessie Hammon CLARK d. 15 Mar 1961 Lavern CLARK d. 1930 Hollis H. CLARK d. 1972 Thank you very much for any help you can give me. I'm afraid I don't know the name of any newspaper that would have covered that area, but would appreciate any and all help on this one. Kind regards, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia
