Hello Nancy - Could you please have a look at your book "Owosso A-Z", and see if my Morton or Bugbee families might be mentioned? That would be Dorus Morton, & his sons Thomas Slayton, Joshua, and Dillus (Dillucena). They lived in Owosso circa 1850 - 1880 where Dorus owned a farm but was a master mason, too. I believe Omar, the fourth son, went to California. Joshua married Martha BUGBEE, sister to Harrison S. and Samuel B. Bugbee (also farmers) and daughter of Salmon J. Bugbee, at Bennington, MI. 15 Nov 1846, but they lived in Owosso for a time before moving north. Dillus married Mary Young 13 Dec 1850, and Thomas Slayton (T.S.) married Lucy BEARD 2 Dec 1844. Every little bit I can discover about them is very gratefully received. There are so many gaps. For instance, Thomas Slayton's family, and Dillus' family, are buried in Pinetree Cemetery, but there's no mention of Dorus. (Although I believe he's with the family, perhaps with an unmarked grave.) Their mother, Dorus' wife, is buried in Franklin, Oakland County, along with their tiny baby son - and it doesn't appear he's there. So - I'm searching for hints, and possible means of detecting Dorus' origins. Are Laingsburg, Owosso, and Bennington close to each other? Those 3 places keep coming up in various records, and it's easy to get confused. No, I don't have the original images. Betsy
I was born and raised in Perry, MI in Shiawasse Co. Elsie and Ovid High Schools were in the same conference as Perry, so we visited both towns. Ovid is or was on the county line. East side of Main St. was Shiawassee Co. and the west side of Main was in Clinton Co. I think the same thing existed in Elsie. They sure did and even with a really good Shiawasse County map with townships and land designations on them, you almost have to talk to a local to know which is the correct boundary line. Betsy
That is my next step, checking the Owosso library and the Clinton County Historical Archives. I have already been to the Shiawasse Courthouse and checked records there as well as the Jennings Lyons Funeral Home who buried many of the family. I have also gotten as much information as possible from the keeper of the records for Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon where many are buried. I have also checked all the census records for 1840 - 1930. The children of Jerome and Eliza are: John M Sawyer 1847 - 1928 Wright C. Sawyer 1849 - 1928 Jerome R. Sawyer 1852 - ? Franklin (Frank) Sawyer 1854 - 1924 Gilbert Hicks Sawyer 1858 - 1941 Eliza Sawyer Mary "Carrie" Sawyer 1960 Thomas Sawyer 1862 - 1940 Annie "Amy" Sawyer 1872 - They all lived in or near Elsie and Ovid. There was even a Sawyer School. One of the girls married a Litchfield. One married a Darling. One married a Loynes. Two Sawyers married two Loynes. Perhaps the library in Owosso can help me. Thanks for the suggestion. Betsy
do you have the actual census images, because I checked the 1870 and found some differences . . . ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 4:44 PM Subject: Re: [MISHIAWA] Jerome Sawyer 1810 - 18?? > That is my next step, checking the Owosso library and the Clinton County > Historical Archives. Hi Nancy, This doesn't pertain to your search for ancestors but here is a story that parallels your information about living in one township and getting mail in another. A friend of mine lived in Pennsylvania but his mailing address was in Ohio. I guess the post office doesn't care about state lines and his delivery person came from the post office in Ohio. Now just try convincing companies or cops that you live in Pennsylvania even though your address is in Ohio. Good luck in your search. vern ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 8:30 AM Subject: Re: [MISHIAWA] Jerome Sawyer 1810 - 18?? > Nancy, I have found this to be very confusing. Nancy, I have found this to be very confusing. I am from Texas and this is fairly new to me even though my mother's family all lived here. Ovid and Elsie are in Clinton County, but just on the border, and so not in Shiawasse County. My family owned land in Fairfield Township, Shiawasse County, but got their mail in Elsie! How confusing. Some records are in Clinton County and some in Shiawasse. This is a real learning experience for me. Betsy, I have looked in my Owosso, MI A to Z book and sorry not to find your Sawyer or Clement names. I looked and immediately found the Tillitotson family in Elsie MI. I am a native of MI and had never heard of Ovid and Elsie...so glad to learn they are part of Schiawassee County. My Phillips family were in Bancroft. Nancy
Thanks for the suggestion, Nancy. Yes, I have looked at the census for 1860 and 1870. Jerome, or Richard as he is sometimes listed, is listed on both of the census lists. But he disappears in 1880. I do have the names of his children. In fact, today, I visited the Historical Section of the Elsie, MI, library where the family lived and obtained a great quantity of material on the children. However, there was little information on Jerome Richard Sawyer. One of the very helpful ladies suggested that perhaps he was buried on the farm and his death never recorded. That would make sense since they were all farmers. If anyone ever needs to research a family from the Elsie-Ovid area, the library has great information including indexed lists for cemeteries, marriages, deaths (certificates), obituaries, family genealogies, and much more. And, the volunteers could not have been more helpful. Thanks, Nancy. Have you looked for him in the 1850 and 1860 Census? You should be able to find him with the family. Nancy

Carolyn, Something wrong with that date of death if before 1923 cause 24 Nov on a Tues. would only be in 1908, 1914 and 1925. It would have been on Tuesday in 1920, but think that is Leap Year, so went to Wed. I used the date calculator in PAF, my genealogy program. I also think the cemetery referred to is Greenwood, cause in "The Michigan Cemetery Source Book" the only cemetery shown for Vernon Twp. that was listed in Vernon (the town?) is Greenwood. Chalker and Gardner Grave is in Durand. No place shown for Lovejoy Cemetery, only Sec. 33, Prior Rd. The Geographic Names Information System states that Lovejoy is in Durand also. And that Greenwood is in Corunna. The obit is probably referring to the township name I also searched the Greenwood Cemetery inscriptions on the Shiawassee Co. web page and didn't find Alice under the name Barber, Ross or Hulett.
