    1. [MISAGINA] Chapin Twp. School Censuses 1871-1889 - Saginaw

    3. There are new files on the Saginaw MIGenWeb site for visitors to go through. >From the Michigan State Archives The Chapin Township School Censuses are started. The 1871 through part of 1889 are done. There were four schools in Chapin through this time period. All the schools had a number 1-4. One being the northern most in the township and four the southern most. As with most census takers the spelling of names, both first and last, has been extremely creative so far. The group documents, I was working in first are all getting pretty fragile as they are the originals so photocopying was out of the question. The listing for these files say they go to 1931. The ones done at present include the school, year ending (early September for this time period) the student's name, and age. The teachers that taught that year are listed for each class year. Later school censuses I have worked with in the early 1900 years for other counties have the parents and guardians listed. I hope to make monthly updates to these files until done. Just wish I could take a laptop in there. But maybe photocopies can be done with the later ones. It is sad that Chapin is the only township set that they have in Lansing. Are there more someplace else? Has anyone run across them? The direct link to the records for those interested are at: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/saginaw/school_census/students.asp Enjoy!
