I suspect that this cemetery may have some connection with my gg-grandfather, Colin McBRATNIE, who was an itinerant Methodist minister. At one time, there was a McBratnie Church that was named for him -- my grandmother said it was in Hemlock, but it no longer exists. Anyway, I have a 1962 newspaper article about the McBratnie Cemetery -- did I send you a scan of it? If not, let me know. The article says "James Township officials appropriate a small amount of money each year to maintain the one-acre cemetery....The plot is located on Stroebel Road, 1/4 mile west of South Center Road. It is situated on a slope, high along the road, but low at the far end....There are only about 20 tombstones in the cemetery today, but more persons than that are buried there....the last funeral [was held] 'at least 25 years ago.' " Also from the article: "Names on the stones reflect the hardy German settlers who farmed James Township many years ago -- names like BECKER, BUSSINGER, PABST, BRIGGS, KAUFFMAN and BLOWER. There's also a tombstone with the name STROEBEL on it, but no one named STROEBEL lies in the burial plot. Many of the inscriptions are in German." The article includes biographical info about Jacob STROEBEL and his family. If anyone else wants a copy of it, let me know. Mary Richardson
