Carolyn, is there a time limit to get a cemetery done? I can volunteer to do Owen Cemetery on N. River Rd. Its a pretty big cemetery and I'm sure it would take some time to do. What is the criteria for doing it also? I mean what format should it be done in? I have a digital camera that records on floppy disks so it would be easy to get the disks to you for posting. A lot of my relatives are buried there. Pat Carolyn Obertein wrote: >Hi Margaret, >No one has photographed that one yet. Hi Pat, If you can walk, aim and push the button you can do this. Owen Cemetery would take about 3-4 hours total to do. You can do it all at one time or a few at a time. It is up to you. There is no time limit on when you need to finish. I set my digital camera at the lowest resolution and lowest quality and I think the photos still come out good for the website. Some tips I use when photographing headstones: 1. Don't cast your shadow on the headstone when photographing. 2. Get as close to the writing as possible. 3. Some stones show your reflection. In this case I try to stand to the side. 4. If you look through the lens and have trouble seeing the writing try standing off to one side or the other until you get the best possible shot. 5. For your safety watch where you are walking so you don't trip over low stones or holes. Try to photograph with someone. (It makes it more fun) If during the hot summer take plenty of water with you. I have a fanny pack that I keep spare batteries, disk, chalk, brush, etc. During the real hot summer I found a headband that you soak in water for 30 minutes and it has some kind of gel in it to help keep you cool. I wear one around my head and one around my neck. Take a small child with you. They love to brush off the headstones for you. Especially if some of their ancestors are there. I show my grandson where they are buried and how they are related to him. For instance, one cemetery my grandson asked if anyone there was related to him. I told him my sister was buried in the cemetery. I didn't take him directly to her stone. But started photographing a few rows away. He was just learning to read so as he brushed off the stones I told him to watch for a headstone t! hat had a name that started with a "K" and if it had an "ing" after the K it would spell King and that would be her headstone. He found many that started with a K. But soon he came to hers. I then had him try to sound out her first name. With help he could read her name "Nancy King". A month later we went back to photograph the other half of the cemetery. We were on the other side of the cemetery when he said, "This is where my Aunt Nancy is buried." I told him he was right and asked if he thought he could find it again. He told me "It is way over there Grandma". I told him to show me. I couldn't believe it, he walked to the other side of the cemetery and found her stone. He said see it says "Nancy King" she was your sister. I asked if he would like to hear a funny story about her. So I told him some thing we use to do when we were his age that I knew he would find funny. The poor kid is hooked. He loves going to the cemetery with me. We always start out by st! opping at McDonald's and taking it to the cemetery for a picnic on a quilt before we photograph. He has his own fanny pack with a brush and chalk. His mom says everytime they go by a cemetery he tells his mom "Grandma and I took pictures at that cemetery" or "Grandma and I will have to take pictures at that cemetery." Or he will tell her who is buried there and the funny story I always tell him about that person. Don't photograph until you get tired. Enjoy it. When your tired of doing it that day...quit. Come back later when your in the mood to do it again. I love to walk and use this time to walk the cemetery photographing. It's like being in a nice peaceful park for my walk. I have even seen people using cemeteries to jog and walk in. Always be aware of who is around you. Some cemeteries are very secluded and you should trust your gut instinct. If something don't feel right about someone that is in the cemetery leave. There was a few times I sat in my car until someone I was uncomfortable with left. I miss walking because it has been so cold. But today was such a beautiful day I photographed Section 2 of the Brant Cemetery when I got out of work. So as you can see it is easy....Walk, aim and push a button. Send the disk to me and I do the rest. Let me know if you would like to help. If you would like me to meet you there and help you I can do that so you don't have to photograph alone. Let me know.
