I am searching for anyone who might know whether Saginaw Gear's payroll records might be archived somewhere. My dad was a gunsmith prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. He gave Saginaw, MI as his "bona fide" place of residence when he enlisted in Detroit. While surfing the net, I found that Saginaw Gear produced part for Browning machine guns during WW1. The old "gun plant" was located on Holmes Street. His military records were among those that burned in 1973 in St. Louis. Since he was orphaned at age 5 in Tx. or NM, and the people who took him in have long since died, I have no way to find out about his youth. He did say that he boarded with a Bohemian family. One of the sons, who was born prematurely and was so tiny his head fit into a teacup, grew to be a big, strong man. That young fellow worked in some sort of a foundry where he got a small cut which resulted in lock-jaw, and he died within a week. I f any of this sounds familiar to you, please email me with some shred of hope. Thank you, Maria
