This day, which has a history stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. While enjoying this three-day weekend, be sure to take the time to ponder about the sacrifices all our war heroes took to protect this country's freedom. Honor those who have died so that others - at home and around the world - can enjoy the freedoms of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. We walked among the crosses We walked among the crosses Where our fallen soldiers lay.And listened to the bugle As taps began to play. The Chaplin led a prayer We stood with heads bowed low. And I thought of fallen comrades I had known so long ago. They came from every city Across this fe! rtile land.Tahat we might live in freedom. They lie here 'neath the sand. I felt a little guiltyMy sacrifice was small.I only lost a little timeBut these men lost their all. Now the services are overFor this Memorial Day.To the names upon these crosses I just want to say, Thanks for what you've given No one could ask for more.May you rest with God in heavenFrom now through evermore.
