Does anyone in this flood of memory recollections have any pictures or know of where there are some of any Saginaw homes/neighborhoods around the turn of the century (1900). More specifically any Johnson Street homes. I traveled to Saginaw in '98 from California to do family research and as I am sure most of you know - the neighborhood is nowhere near what it was years ago. My family's home is long gone and a lot of the homes are run down or boarded up (11th and Johnson). Thank you. [email protected]
Sorry for the length of this message, but........... I am researching the names KINNEY and WILSON from the Saginaw area. First, I'd like to say that I have never been to Saginaw and actually for the last twenty years have lived in Australia, but I have enjoyed reading your memories of earlier days in Saginaw very much. I sure hope to one day try Spatz Bread! It sounds soooo good! The little money tubes brought back memories too. I was also fascinated by them as a child in Seattle where I grew up. My entire paternal line has been in Michigan for several generation so if anyone out there can be of assistance, it would be appreciated. What is written below is just about everything I know except that Anna Martha Wilson (Willson) and Peter W. Kinney were married in Genesee County in 1854. She was born in NY and he is NJ. East Saginaw was shown as the residence of Peter W. KINNEY at the time of their marriage. The Wilson family (Anna Martha's parents and siblings) moved to Oakland County in 1838 from NY and mostly remained there in the area of Springfield Township. Anna Willson's obituary appeared in the Saginaw Evening News, Wednesday December 26, 1894, p. 6 Anna M., wife of Peter W. Kinney, died yesterday morning at the family residence, 413 North Franklin street, of consumption, aged 58 years. She leaves a husband, one daughter, Miss Belle, and two sons, George W. and Daniel W., all of this city. Funeral tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the residence. **************************** Daniel Webster Kinney was my g-grandfather. His wife Fanny KENNY died in 1893 and he remarried to an unknown woman who already had a daughter. He died in Bay City in 1899 to the best of my knowledge. ****************************** In an old Atlas dated 1877, someone was able to find a P.W. Kinney living in Saginaw and owning lots west of the Saginaw River in the Northern part of Saginaw. It shows that P.W. Kinney owns four lots bordering Pine Street on the west (runs North/South) and Oak Street (on the South), and Zilwaukie Road on the East. The lots are together, and to the East of the land is a steam planing mill, owned by W. H. Edwards & Co. That business is on a waterway connected to the Saginaw River. No Neighbors are listed on the other lots owned by P.W. Kinney. ************************** On Wednesday, December 26, 1894, the same day that Peter's wife Anna's obituary appeared in the Saginaw Evening News the following was also printed: INSANITY AND DEATH Double Affliction in a Well-known Saginaw Family. Peter W. Kinney, of 413 North Franklin street, whose wife died yesterday morning is locked up at headquarters, having become violently insane. The mental affliction has been coming on for some time and has assumed an aggravated form, the unfortunate man making several attacks upon visitors who have called at his house. His son made application in the probate court this morning to have him adjudged insane and sent to the asylum at Pontiac, and a hearing was set for the case next Friday. Peter W. Kinney's Death Certificate from Oakland County, MI showed that he died in Pontiac on December 6, 1911. The cause of death was shown as senility - epileptic insanity. His occupation was shown as a Millwright. His parents names were shown as William KINNEY and Mary WILSON both apparently born in New Jersey. Mary Wilson may or may NOT be related to Anna Martha's Wilson line. I really just don't know at this point. Well, now you know just about everything I do about my KINNEY and WILSON line. If anyone has ANY connection to these names and/or could give me a little more information on the area that they lived in at that time.... it would be greatly apprecitated. Many thanks in advance, Bonnie Menzer Barnes Perth, Western Australia
