In 'Indians, 'Jacks, and Pines by Stuart D. Gross on page 4: The Chippaewas gave Saginaw its name. They called it 'Saugee-an-te-nah-ke-wat' which means "where the Saugee (Sauk) were. The names Saginaw had to pass through many more different spelling before it reached its final form. Sue D.
