Hi Shelly, This is fantastic. Thank you. I will post this to the mail list. I'll try to get over there this week to photograph and check it out! Saja423@aol.com wrote: Hi Carolyn, Please pass this along to the MISAGINA mailing list. Today I found the Swarthout family cemetery in Saginaw, MI. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. It is family owned and I was able to speak with the owner. He is the great grandson of A.R. Swarthout who originally owned the land which he purchased from the government on or before 1855. You can find the Swarthout name on the 1877 Saginaw Platt Map. Several Swarthout's owned over 1,000 acres. The cemetery is located at the intersection of Hawthorn and Swarthout off of Brockway directly behind the Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery. Brockway was called the "Crossroad". Many stones are still readable and many more are fully covered under the debris. Unfortunately some headstones were vandalized about 25 years ago. The following is a list of some of the names I recorded today. The owner is willing to allow anyone who is interested to come onto the property to take photos, stone rubbings, etc. He has some documentation as to the names of those buried there. He recently moved back to Saginaw from a 15 year absense and has purchased his family home. If you go to the cemetery, he will come out to talk to you. His name is John Cammin and his home is next to the cemetery at 1500 Hawthorne Drive Names: Swarthout, A. R. born: 28 Sept 1796 died: 5 June 1881 Swarthout, Hannah (spouse) born: 7 May 1798 died: 22 Mar1877 Swarthout, John born: 1811 died: 1899 Swarthout, Anna born: 1811 died: 1900 John's spouse Swarthout, James K. born: 1874 died: 1945 Swarthout, Angeline born: 1842 died: 1936 Swarthout (many others with this last name) Cammin, John Cammin, Mildred (Swarthout) John's spouse Steinbauer, John Steinbauer, Martha (?) Steinbauer, John F. McLean, John (infant) William, Elizabeth died: 1872 William (several other's with this last name) Trier, Thaobald C. born: 1831 died: 1893 Spaeth, J. C. Spaeth, Anna born: 1820 died: 1906 Hiesrodt, John M. military man C.O.F. 1 Mich. E & M Smith, John Heinlein Pistorious (several) NOTE: There are other readable stones and many, many that need to be uncovered. Mr. Cammin, the owner and descendant of the Swarthout & Cammin families wants to restore this precious graveyard as much as possible. Maybe some of us can volunteer and then the headstones can be documented and photographed.
